Stinky Coyote
WKR
Just for fun...
We’ve got more than enough miles on this but it’s sunny and beers flowing.
And I’ve been shooting more this year than usual and more rifles than usual as I seem to buy but never sell. I’m sure that’s a rare condition.
Anyway, been rolling 6.5 Grendel 123’s since 2017/2018 and send em 500-600 on gongs for development (420 on game no issues) and last few seasons added a couple 308’s with same bc/sd 168’s. Murder’s of course.
But last season they finally allowed .22 centerfire in our province and I skipped it with the Grendels in house, then sometime around end of ice fishing season this year I got a bug in my arse while at local shop and saw some 73 gr eldm 223 on shelf and asked if they had a tikka 8 twist stainless kicking around. They did, some special edition camo dipped superlight on sale so like Monday morning ‘here we fackin go again’....scooped the gun and all their ammo and dug out some talleys and a Burris I had in one of ‘the boxes’ and danged if it didn’t stack the fack out of em like all you a-holes said it would. Fun from shot one.
Then get the airguns of Arizona rings order going, to be fair I tried for um first...anyway one day perhaps with the new 51st state peddler that got back to me (FYI I’ll stock up on some 30mm and 1” lowest available when supply catches up)...and ordered a better scope to stretch things out and setup as yet another backup kids loaner as a dad needs at least 4 right? Even if only has 2 kids. Friends must be considered.
So I get to playing on my heavy 1/2”x15” gong at distances and also did scope roulette over winter so lots of setup and drop confirms 5-600 on all the units.
And back to the point of this Saturday night thread...wallop.
I had to run ollins adapter on spotter for the 223 just to make sure I was on steel at 500 and 550 as I couldn’t make sh1t out through 8x scopes lol. And I couldn’t hear sh1t with ears on either. That’s new.
I could always see the wiggle and hear the wallop come back with the 123’s and especially so with 168’s with ears on and despite these 73’s leaving a couple hunny fps faster I couldn’t see or hear shinola, except maybe just maybe one slight wiggle of gong if I hit near edge.
The good news is that the little 223 drills and hasn’t missed that chunk of steel lol. And I knew I was well past big game fps but coyotes and rocks look the fook out! Send 3 at 500 and 2.5”, send 3 at 550 and 4.5”...not bad at all for off the shelf everything. Wind is still pretty reasonable and a lean will get most Killy done.
But just wanted to share the all new experience. I know it makes no difference to actually sealing the deal as I adopted the formula way back and took years of guff over the Grendel as a ‘squirrel gun’ yet here we are 8 seasons in and 25 animals and 11 yard recovery distance to 420...they can all suck sideways haha. And so for the first time since then I’ve breeched my self imposed formula that mainly consists of .25 sd tipped match over 120 gr and at moderate velocities. All evidence point to this .208 sd formula will still do what I love and make even easier (especially for the non regular shooters) to succeed. No replacement for placement.
But, the little facker sure lacks some wallop haha.
And it’s of no surprise the 77 tmk is a hit at .22 sd and especially so for the trend to 88’s that actually does hit my sd threshold while guys like khntr are probably laughing out loud while they dumping moose and elk lol. Happy Saturday cocktails.
First pic 2 168’s at 200 and 2nd pic 3 73’s at 500 and no I did not lean into wind I needed to see 2.9 mil impact at 3.0 hold and good to go, didn’t quite get lined up with wind but still on steel lined up I held center of gong with 3.0 on all 3 quick-ish. Wish I could post the vids as easily as the pics but even at 600+ there’s no mistaking the difference that gong moves and the report coming back. Wallop is a thing but we don’t know how to measure it worth a fack yet to discuss its differences. I can tell you it’s hard to catch a 123 from a Grendel in a deer unless it’s dang near Texas heart, and the 168 blows through broadside big ole cow moose at 275. It’s early as maybe only handful of critters with the 168 so far but I think average recovery distance is about 5 yards further than the 25 or so 123 eldm kills so far. Worries are next to zero with the 73 but not zero yet like the .25 sd murders have proven.
You all are definitely gonna hear about it as we go. Heck maybe in the immortal thread but I ain’t throwing a coyote into that legend.
One day with terminal coefficients and ft/lbs per inch we will be able to narrow this c-hair down even further. It’s fairly clear where the minimum formula lands.
