Wallop VS Authority. What’s the difference?

The terms “wallop” and “authority” are being used a lot (in jest, mostly) in the past year or so. What’s the difference? Can one have a firearm with authority, but no wallop and vice versa? What happens when a gun has both? Is it possible?

Authority is Wallop x Energy x Knockdown ² x bullet diameter. So they all work together to create Authority.

Now you can have a whole lot of wallop, but if your knockdown number is weak (remember it’s squared so it’s what can really make it or break it) then even a big bullet can’t make up for it and you won’t have as much authority as you might think you do.

I suggest you visit some gun stores or your local Sportmans warehouse. They should be able to get you squared away. Lots of knowledge nuggets you can pick up.

Man I'm glad it's October where I live!!

In all seriousness: wallop felt = authority dealt

Wallop is what you feel, authority is dealt on the animal. Theoretically, if you can get these forces to match exactly, they will cancel out (Newton’s 3rd law) and there will be zero recoil.
No one has achieved this, why they keep coming out with new calibers and why people hand load. I don’t think the science is there but they came close with the 7BC introducing new materials into the equation. Another 50 years and I think they’ll get it.

One of the pioneers of this push is Joseph von Benedikt who is searching primarily for his brother, Aram. Evidently if you get this magic ratio correct, any shot, including to the leg, is fatal to the animal.

Power perceived is power achieved. --->Perception depends on perspective. ---->Perspective depends on location.

Mathematical proof that it's all about placement, not displacement.

ETA: Also, you can have knockdown power or you can have a shoulder fired weapon. Physics says you must choose *one*.

Sorry, but these are subjective terms that have different meanings to different people. They could be synonymous to some and may be similar but different to others. Ultimately, they are are not based on data, which is the root of this discussion.

To me, wallop can only be achieved with a larger bores and non spitzer bullets. 35 whelen with a big round nose bullet has wallop.

Authority is the way a gun kills. A gun can kill with authority without wallop. A gun with wallop doesn't necessarily kill with authority.

The more that bullet smacks that animal like a brick upon initial impact the more wallop, the more it kills like lightning the more authority.

Just need some more downsizing!

Is this a secret Demoncratic political thread? I mean there appears to be more than a significant connection as all those terms are, well, full of (this is a family friendly forom, so I can't write that last word).

Either way, have fun boys.

Authority is a noun that belongs to the action a living person takes or can take. Authoritative is an adjective that describes the outcome the action a living person takes.

Firearms cannot have authority and is nonsensical to even have debate about it...

I see memes in your future, although there’s a chance some of those guys are actually out in the woods hunting.

I don’t know about authority, but here’s what I know about whallop. “If ye doont eat yer reecoil, ye cahnt have inny whallop!! How ken ye hahve inny whallop if ye doont eet yer recoil??”

I have recently switched from 30-06 to 7-08 because my aging shoulders have grown tired of eating recoil and getting whalloped.

The proper order of operations is: you must wallop with authority, and those who speak about wallop do so with authority. Not sure how it can make any clearer.

Cue the human expert on such matters, Mr. Spoomer.

LOL.
