Wall tent stove jack location

What's your preferred wall tent stove jack location? Most stove jacks are out the roof. I have a buddy who prefers out the end wall thou. Roof or end wall jack what do you prefer?

I prefer mine in a corner closest to the entrance 'door'. Easier to carry in wood without making a huge mess. Also leaves lots of room and don't have to walk around it all the time.

Roof or wall for the stove jack?

Yes by the door is key.

The more pipe inside the more btu output. I put mine out the side high and wish I had gone straight up. Wind gust can knock my pipe apart at times and Now I need to pack an elbow which is the only non-titanium part in the system.

As noted the roof is best..have done the side wall thing and never again due to wind issues and need for elbows. Have mine close to door for ease of wood transport.

These bolt-in jacks are available and usually on ebay. Pretty slick silicone cut-to-fit pipe install. A little heavier but no sewing or gluing required.

The higher in elevation you are the more difficult it is to get a stove to draft at times. "Any" horizontal piping is tougher to get to draft versus a vertical one.
So long story short - out the roof for me for that reason plus the ones already listed.

If it goes out the side its allot easier to put a tarp over the tent

The tarp or fly for my wall tent has a stove jack in it same as the tent. The hassle of putting the pipe out the side wall negates having the tarp back of the stove pipe if they don't have matching holes.

All of our tents have it out the side near door. Yes the elbows can be a pain but once you have the piping you need its pretty simple. The advantage to out the side is we also lay a large tarp over for extra protection and storage. We have another frame that the tarp will also cover which acts as a garage/ kitchen. There is also enough over lap to put things under the tarp along side the tent.

Our last shelter was homemade so we ran it out the side due to materials used. It heated very well, and wasn't very difficult to setup but it did require more bracing than going straight thru the roof.

In a calendar year I'll spend any where from 3 to 7 months in a wall tent. I've used side wall and roof stove jacks extensively, I much prefer side wall. During heavy rain or snow fall the nonstop running of water down the stove pipe and into the tent drives me insane. I made my own air tight stove and spend a lot of time at or near tree line and have not experienced any difficulty getting the stove to draft. I like being able to cover the complete roof with a single tarp without putting a hole in it.
