Gents-

Next year our group will be larger and we are going to basecamp hunt instead of bivvy. Having never used a large canvas tent, some help will be appreciated.

5/6 guys
We want a stove
Idaho/MT rifle (we usually see snow)

Truck/trailer will be used for some gear storage

I’d like some suggestions on tent brand/size and stove setups and pros and cons

Thanks in advance-
One of the first things to decide is do you want the stove out the roof or out the side. PNW tent builders normally put the stove out the side due to rain. Others put the stove jack out the top. There are benefits and drawbacks to both. Probably comes down to personal preference. Also need to decide if you want an internal or external frame. For 5-6 guys, I would go as large a possible to allow room for gear and a safety area around stove. Also need to decide if you will be cooking and eating in tent. That requires more space.

Make sure you get a tent with an actual 5 ft wall. Not all are. Tents with two doors are more difficult to get tight and you loose sleeping space. With a larger tent, consider getting two stove jacks. One on either side. Allows you to put the stove pipe down wind. Less holes in roof.

I would recommend going to an outdoor show like the Portland NW show. Most of the major brands are there and you can get a show special and they have tents set up to look at. For a wood stove, IMO Cylinder stoves out of Utah make one of the best. They also sell a nice tent and you can get a combo deal. Bravo tents are really nice but a bit more expensive. Davis Tents in Denver are really nice people and sell a quality product.

Well I'm a big fan of the Wall Tent Shop, a sponsor here. I would suggest at least a 16x20 for that many hunters. I have a 14 x16 sleeping tent and that would be very cramped with no tables or chairs to set stuff on with 5 to 6 inside. Also get the biggest stove to hopefully get 6+ hours of sleep with a stove full of wood. This year I brought some plywood for a flooring in the cook tent (12x14) because of the mess (snow & mud) last year. Worked great until it dried out then the plywood curled and was tripping everyone. Needed to have some hinges to attach the sheets together or spikes to pin corners down. But as it dried out we threw out the offending sheets. Depends on whether your ground will stay frozen or is a wet mess like mine was in Colorado in 2018. A 16x20 is a big investment and you need to recognize that you may not have that many hunters every year. Plus are you going to have a separate cook shack or what. 2 tents and the accompanying gear and hardware can be more than $5K easily. You got to think about stoves to cook food on, cots, tables, lights, pots & pans, etc. trust me, I have spent a small fortune recently on my "outfitting" services for my buddies. But I love doing it. Send me a PM if you need further help.

+1 on Bravo tents. nobody makes a better tent. but they do cost a bit more. part of it depends on how much often you will use.

I will add the bigger the tent, the more it weighs too. 2 tents will be more versatile down the line. I would suggest you get one and have a buddy spring for the other.

I have one from Cylinder stove. Got a package from them. Going on 10 years with it. Works for me and my pards.

We usually set up a “porch” and cook outside. Yeah, it’s a pain sometimes when it’s cold. However my tent never smells like bacon....just farts....

Bigger the tent, the larger stove pipe you will want.

I have 2 wall tents, one the flue goes straight up, the other goes out the end wall.
You'll get better draft with a flue going straight up, especially when there is low pressure weather.
The end wall flue requires 2 corners in the stove pipe and that restricts the draft and creates creosote build up.

Another issue with the end wall stove pipe is it doesnt have the stability of a stove pipe going straight up thru the roof. You will need to tie it off with wire or something so it doesnt fall in the wind.

Those are just some of the things I ran into.

But hey - YMMV

But hey - YMMV

It does vary..... Never needed more than one elbow at the stove. And a pipe 'T' at the end, vertical, will help draw and eliminate backdrafts on endwall jacks. And the best part? Never a burnhole in the roof with a wall jack. And the roof is easier to tarp...... And screw floors. I refuse to take my boots off everytime I enter. And hate sweeping/cleaning floors, or taking the time to even put one in, no matter what kind. A carpet scrap next to the cot to stand on to dress, is the most I'll do.

Depending on the room you have hauling and access to where your putting the tent I have multiple times set up an old house stove I picked up used cheaper than an actual tent stove and it keeps burning longer but it is heavier !

We use a 14x16 tent from the wall tent shop. It is great for 3-4 guys with gear. We also used a new stove from Clarry pellet stove in the tent this year and it was a game changer. We loaded it with 50lbs of pellets and it would burn for around 12 hours or so. I absolutely recommend that stove for anyone looking to upgrade.

I’ve got a 14x16 from the wall tent shop with a stove in it and it’ll very comfortably fit four guys but I’d go with the 16x20 for 5-6. Wall tent shop makes a top notch tent I highly recommend them I’ve had mine all over the country in snow and sub zero temps and it’s never let me down and their prices are very reasonable.

I’ve got a 16x20 canvas from the Tentshop. Com crew. Great quality and I’m very happy with it. Should be big enough for 4-6 hunters.. I went with the four dog stove tho and I’m really happy with it. Watch Tentshop’s Youtube videos and Rich will explain about their tents. Then watch four dog stove on YouTube and you will see the quality of their stove. My setup works great

I have two Davis tents. A 10x12 for 1-2 people and a 14x16 for up to 4 people. I would think you’d want larger than a 14x16 and at least a size large stove. My medium stove puts out plenty of heat but the burn times aren’t as long as I’d like. I would also suggest getting any added features you think you would like such as windows, front screen and eave sleeves. It’s better to order it exactly the way you want the first time.

I am not sure it is possible to beat Davis.

I would also check out Beckel and Bravo. All 3 are close to equal in quality. Davis usually smokes the others in price.

Davis has fantastic support before and after the purchase. Beckel is under new ownership, so maybe their support is better now. It was never bad, but Davis was better.

Bravo has a great reputation, but I don't have one of their tents. I have a 14x16 Davis and a 15x21 Beckel. Also have an unknown brand 14x16. 4 or more people and we take the Beckel.

It's not quite a wall tent but you might want to look into Alaska Tent and Tarp's Arctic Oven. Their tents sizes range from 8'x8' to 12'x24'. I have their 10'x10' and a hunting buddy has a 12'x12'. These are quality tents and I recommend them highly.
