Wall Tent Frame

Just found a deal on a used wall tent, but didn't have a frame. Won't be an issue in most places I hunt, as there plenty of lodgepoles to cut pole out of. That being said, where I will be hunting in Colorado this year, I will likely be camping in pinion/juniper country. I don't have it in the budget at this time to pay for a frame- any ideas?

I have seen 4" ratchet straps between trees, but seemed like it had a lot of sag- thought maybe steel cable tightened with a come-along. Still hoping for a better solution than this.

Hey Alec,

We have many customers who do the steel cable with the come-along and it works out well for them. You inherently will have some sag, but it'll get the job done!

I have an old Denver Tent Co 10x12 wall tent that came with a frame like in the attached video, I'm not sure if it would work for your tent but it works well for my tent. If you'd like I can take some picture of the frame itself tomorrow for you.

We did the build your own kit from montana canvas i think it was. They supply you with the frame and you buy elec conduit. $300-400. Or go the 2x4 route but with the price of wood the frame may be cheaper.

The metal internal frame is the way to go long term. But since you stated that your budget doesn’t allow it right now, the wood frame is cheaper and will work just fine. I have used both. I’m not a fan of the cable/ratchet straps due to it limiting where you can set the tent up. UNLESS you are packing in To a remote area. Also, if you don’t already have the straps, you may be close on cost of making it out of wood.
If the wood frame is temporary until you can afford a metal internal, look around for scrap wood. The side walls aren’t that tall and you can get two posts out of a single 2x4. Sometimes neighbors or other sources will give away warped boards. If you were closer, I’d let you dig through my scrap pile.
The rope tie downs are inexpensive to make also.
