VX3HD or something else?

Looking for a $400-$700 scope, under 20 or so ounces, and 14-16x on the top end. Currently looking at the vx3hd 4.5-14x40. I have it in my head that I need a bdc type reticle, but the CDS should take it's place. Then I've been reading about issues with the dialing on some Leupolds so I'm questioning going with the CDS vx3. I also saw the Burris signature hd 3-15x44 with locking turrets, bdc reticle, and illumination at 20 ounces. Are there other options I should be looking at or is the VX3HD the way to go?

What is your application?

Open range, thick timber, short range, long range…etc

0-500 yards. Likely everything but super thick timber. Central Montana mule deer, Wyoming antelope, etc. I know I want more than 3-9 but don't necessarily need up to 16. The 3-15 seems perfect

I really like the 3-15 magnification range for an all around western scope. Check out the Zeiss V4 4-16 if you want a lot of scope for the money. You can buy Demo models often times, in your price range. Great value.

I’ve been shooting that VX3 4.5-14 on a 300 WM for a couple years, things die when I shoot at them. Smacked the turret on a rock pretty good last spring and it knocked it out of zero by 1.5 MOA or something. Other than that, it’s been good, I’ve only shot it out to 500-ish but it dials nice for all I can tell.

I'd look at the Zeiss V-4 scopes. They are allot more dependable than Leupold and dial perfectly from what I've seen so far. Look at Redhawk rifles. They have demo scopes in your price range

Start researching at the link below. 20oz maximum is a tall order for a reliable scope. I used to have that mindset, I’ve reset it to 25 oz.

I was given the Leupold VX3 4.5x14x40 Windplex reticle. Dont care for the mag range or the reticle. I did test it with a target that checks dialing with the scope and it was dead on. I didnt drop it or smack with a hammer, but I felt good about what I saw when I tested. That being said, I found a older Bushnell 6500 2.5x16 that I placed on the rifle and I am very pleased with it. But I wouldn't hesitate to put the Leupold on another rifle.

Trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 mil dot, 12 ounces and out to 500 should be fine
13.4 oz but point taken, very lightweight and a top choice for hunting period, mil-dot or duplex. Kenton Industries does make speed dial turrets for these so you can match your load and dial up, the mil-dot has hold points that will get you over 600 yards also.

The 30mm tube 4.5-14x40 leupolds are some of the most scope for the weight you can buy...15.6-16 oz, have had a few. I tried some vx5 line but found them bulky and heavier than advertised so I'm still about those 1" tube Leupold's, trijicons, and the only 30mm tube qualifying for me and lightweight are those 40mm objective leupolds, usually coming in 4.5-14x.
