Has anyone used any of the vortex monocular's? I was thinking about grabbing one of the solo models 10x25 or 8x36 and leaving my binoculars home when I take the spotting scope. They are only 4.6oz per the website. I've got a $70 gift certificate to binoculars.com and was going to grab one. Decent idea or GIF? My regular binoculars are vortex 10x42's.

GIF in my opinion. I think monoculars are a joke.

I looked at them too. For the money they are ok but I found it rough trying to close one eye and use it. But for the price they are a nice toy for a quick look but any amount of glassing is going to strain. I just looked at both you mentioned at Cabelas 2 days ago decided Id save my money. I wasnt a fan. I did however pick up a pair of Pursuit 10x32 from Bass Pro I was very impressed with. They are Bass Pro's signature Binos. They are small lightweight and very manageable for the price 106$ they where an awesome purchase. I compared them to the Vortex, Nikon, and Leupold. Hands down these little Pursuit Binos where the clear winner for a clear picture and lots of light. Absolute pleasure to look through. I spent a good hour there going through all of them out a window right at the Bino Section at Bass Pro.

I have a ten power that I use for work. The objective is small so light gathering is pretty marginal. I think it would work fine and be very handy to carry, If all you're doing is quick checking where the animal is on the stalk after you have found it with the spotter.

Do you guys then carry compact binoculars when you carry a spotting scope? I don't want to carry the 10x42's AND a spotting scope. I have an older pair of 10x25's I could carry if the monocular's are not a good idea.

If I could I would carry 10's, 15's, a 65mm spotter a monocular and an 85 mm spotter!! I think the gif is chasing Ya down. Binos and a spotter are a must for me on every hunt.

I carry mid or full size binoculars and a spotter. I save weight with a compact spotter, when I am solo and moving more than sitting. I bring the big one when a friend brings the tripod or I am going to be glassing for long periods of time from a certain location (or few locations). I use my binoculars so frequently the size of the 10X42s or 8X32s is worth it to me.

I have tried monoculars. They cause me eye strain.

Cool, thanks for the replies guys. Nixing the monocular idea!! Will either take the 10x42's or the compacts.

Which Vortex models did you compare them to? For $100 I tend to question the build quality. I've learned that build quality is just as, if not more important than good glass. I've had poorly made binos fog up on the inside making them useless until I could catch a couple hours of sunlight to dry them out. Hopefully that's not the case with yours.

And to answer some of your questions, Elkfitness. I used a pair of Vortex 8x32 binos and my Vortex 50mm spotter in Idaho hunting elk. I can't see much difference between 8x and 10x so I opted to go with the lightest option. Never felt under-glassed IMO.
