Vortex HST vs PST

I was planning on buying a Vortex HST 4-16 x 44 riflescope (about $570) for a 7mm rem mag that I will be using for elk hunting and shooting longer range (to see if it is something I would like to do more of).

I found out I can get a PST 6-24 x 50 for about $100 more.

I think the 6-24 will be more scope than what I "need" but is there is a downside other than the additional cost?

Is the PST worth the extra money?

What do you think?

For elk hunting in tight quarters, 6x is higher than most prefer. If you envision ever using this scope/rifle for a situation where you’ll need to make a quick offhand shot in the timber I wouldn’t suggest going that high of power.

Also I think the PST you’re looking at is second focal plane instead of first. If that’s the case you’ll only be able to hold wind or elevation at max power. 24x can be tough when trying to get an animal in your scope. If you ever plan on using the reticle for holdovers in a hunting situation then going anything above about 16x or so for a SFP scope can present some issues.

Thanks for the response. The point regarding a quick shot at 6x is something I overlooked.

I'll second what was said earlier about the 6x minimum. I tried hunting with a 6-24 for a couple years. Open country parts of the area it was great, but when I tried to focus on an elk (turned out to be a cow) in the timber, I couldn't tell if I was looking at a shoulder or a hip. I try and stay with a 3 or 4 minimum scope now, unless it's a rifle I plan on ONLY using in open areas.
