Looking at pulling the trigger on a diamondback tactical 4-16, but want to see if there’s any options or suggestions on a better scope around the same range $350? Range here 300 yards and I plan on varmint hunting with it on a 6.5 Grendel AR. I know it’s a lower end scope but for the one or twice a month use I’m hoping I won’t beat it up too bad

Have you looked at the Athlon Talos BTR 4-14x44 - APLR2 FFP IR MIL
FEATURES
  • Illuminated Reticle: The illuminated reticle provides greater visibility during dusk and dawn and other low ambient light environment.
  • Etched Glass Reticle: Reticle etched on the glass that provides excellent backing support for complex reticle design and offers great durability and much higher shock resistance to recoil
  • Fully Multicoated: Fully Multicoated optics effectively reduces reflected light and increases the transmission of light giving you a brighter image than normal single coated lenses
  • Aircraft Grade Aluminum: Aircraft Grade Aluminum provide extra strength and durability to handle the toughest terrain and offers lifetime of use.
  • Heat Treated One Piece Tube Construction: Heat treated one piece tube gives the scope extra strength over multi-piece tubes. A one piece tube also is better at keeping moisture out thus keeping your scope fog proof for the life of the product
  • Waterproof: Waterproof to protect the scope in the harshest weather conditions or if accidently submerged underwater
  • Fog proof: Fog proof to allow you to immediately engage your target when you take your rifle to cold ambient temperature from warm inside
  • Shockproof: Robust mechanical system with special designs on both control and erector system that give you the ultimate recoil resistance to withstand 1000G recoil for 1000 times.
  • Nitrogen Purged: Nitrogen purging dramatically reduces the moisture inside the tube and helps maintaining fogproof and waterproof.

What’s your opinion on this one Doug? Similar specs to the vortex for a little less which is always nice. I don’t know much about athlon as far as durability or warranty repairs though
We've had get success with this scope:

First Focal Plane ReticleFirst focal plane design allows you to fully utilize specially designed reticles that shrink or grow along with your target as you zoom in or out. These reticles offer quick target engagement at low power while offering precise holdover positions with finer details.

Thank you. I’ll wait for some other to chime in, but I’ll probably be giving you a call tomorrow

I've had bad results with both. Maybe suitable for an air soft rifle or something.
There's no such thing as a feature packed reliable rifle scope under $1000. It simply isn't being done by any company in the market right now. Process capability just isn't there at that price point.
The only rifle scope in that price range worth owning (that I'm aware exists) is the SWFA fixed power.

I put a diamondback tactical on a cheap 6.5cm that I abuse. It has worked great for its intended purpose. I have spun the dials a ton as we shoot to 1200 pretty often and so far it has done the job. I wouldn't trust it on a hunt of a lifetime not cause it has let me down but because you can only ask so much of a $350 scope (my buddy just picked one up for like $180 new). It has minimal features but should work for the above listed. If I were you I would get a used SWFA 3-15. You should be able to find one for about $450-$550. They are crazy reliable, turrets are good, glass is good, and you can add a shim kit to create a mock zero stop. If you do a quick look around rokslide you will find SWFA is probably the best value in a scope you can find. I have 4 and can't say enough good things.

Good to hear. SWFA does seem nice from the ones I’ve seen, might be pushing the budget. I have almost no gear so I’m slowly acquiring. I wouldn’t be opposed to upgrading after I verify how much use I’ll actually get out of it
