You should pick up the book, "Sam O. White, Alaskan" by Jim Reardon. Sam always had a full sized axe. He left a gun at home many times, but never the axe.

This deer was from the Kaibab in 1942 I still have the antlers.

Great Granddad (in white) was an Arizona Ranger so they were probably hunting the people in the following pics

I'm at my folk house for Thanksgiving, and found a pile of 1950's hunting and fishing slides. I'm working on scanning them in (it's a very slow process), but judging by the shear number of wild game photos, they were very successful hunters. A few examples from the first batch I've scanned. All from Alaska.









It does appear that the Trapper Nelson packs were traded in for mechanized travel in the 50's when a large quantity of surplus WW II military equipment hit the market.
