I have a 223 that has been fun getting out to 900yards but want to get to 1000. My 223 is just not quite there. I was debating a 6.5 CM but in reading some comparisons, the 270 looks up to the task but with sad bullet selection. I already have a Rem700 in 270 that is a good shooter but never did a gnats a$$ Load development for it. I have been thinking about working up load with the 145ELDX. I would eventually use it for longer range hunting for pronghorn or muleys too.

Anyone ever tried it?

I’ve not shot a 270 win much past 600, but I’ve shot a 6cm at ~1000. The 6mm 108 and the 270 145 have identical BC, I would expect similar performance (aside from a significant increase in recoil of course).

People do it of course, but it does come at the expense of excessive recoil. I have the same rifle in a 270 and a 65 Creedmoor, the 270 recoil definitely feels stout by comparison. It’s not obnoxious, but definitely very noticeable and would not be my choice for any shooting in volume. I think at least some of the folks who like a 270 and use it at longer range have an aftermarket barrel with a faster twist, to better stabilize higher-bc bullets. I’m not a handloader, but it sounds like there’s at least a higher-bc bullet option or two out there that were intended for use with the 6.8 western in addition to the eldx. No harm in trying it, I’m sure it’ll work fine even if not “ideal”.

Here is my ballistic table in a 1:7.5” twist factory browning western hunter lr 270win with a Nosler 165 accubond long range. I will never shoot it that far unless I move to the plains states but this is what the Hornady app gives me. IMG_0319.pngIMG_0318.png

If you run the numbers it will do it with ease
2900 fps will get you to a thousand with about 8.5 mils of elevation and it will be supersonic to about 1400

80 gn ELDM will get you to a grand in the 223

I hunted with a 270 wsm for awhile. 26” with 140 bergers at 3340fps. I shot out to 1000 on steel but felt like it was best for hunting at 700yds and in. 145s at 2950 will do well for plinking at 900 in mild wind and good for hunting at 600 and in IMO. Assuming your running a 24” Bbl and 10twist 140 bergers or 145 eldx are your best options.

The cartridge will do it with the right bullet IF you have enough twist to stabilize said bullet. Factory ammo and factory barrels aren’t going to work.

Thanks for the replies. It does have a 24” factory barrel. A rebarrel with a better twist is probably in its future but not right now. I do not plan on hunting out to 1000yds. I like to practice at far longer distances than those that I will shoot in a hunting situation. I do this in archery too. I practice out to 80 yards or longer because it exaggerates any weakness in my form. It makes 40yards a chip shot. Practicing out to 900-1000 makes 450 a lot easier IMO.

You might be surprised with shooting the 165 accubond long range. There are people on y.t. getting it to stabilize in factory 1:10 barrels.

Buddy whacked an antelope doe last year at 1130 yards cold bore 1 shot with a 270 win. Quartering to through the front shoulder and found the bullet under the hide in the back ham. Worked just fine if you can be confident enough in your shot placement. Couldn't tell you how much energy it had at that range but quite obviously enough.

I’ve shot a lot of the factory 145 ELD-X ammo out to 800 yards. It doesn’t have the best bc and the wind blows it around more than I prefer.
I just received a 26” McGowen 8 twist barrel to shoot the 170 Bergers out of. This will be shot out to 1k and beyond but will have to wait until I get my reloading equipment set back up.
