Very New to Suppressors

Been thinking about getting a suppressor for a 357 mag rifle (Ruger M77/357 or single shot break action rifle) and 350 Legend (Ruger American Ranch Rifle). 18 and 16 inch barrels respectively.

Have absolutely no idea where to go from here or "what I need to know" - I know zero about suppressors.

Will have to get the 357 mag barrels threaded - is that a major undertaking?

Can someone educate me a bit?

Thanks.

First, the red tape and the wait are stupid, but that is the current reality. It is running 275ish days to get an approval from certification date, which can be a few days after you actually buy, so it is getting tight to have one for this fall. I went with SilencerShop, just because they make the process a bit simpler, esp if you end up buying additional nfa items at a later date.

For those calibers, you are either looking at a pistol can that is also rated for light duty rifle, or one of the "do it all" silencers, like silencerco 36m. If you want the option to maybe shoot some other centerfire rifles like .308, the the 36m is probably a solid bet. If you plan on getting a dedicated .30 cal at some point, then one of the pistol cans might be a good choice.

I went with a deadair wolfman for my .350, as I will be running it on a 9mm sbr most of the time. It was just approved yesterday, so hopefully will be able to get some rounds through it in the next few weeks. One note with the wolfman - you need to run a brake when using it for subersonic rifle rounds.

I have seen some pretty cool lever actions running silencers - check out reddit /r/nfa for photos and a ton of info.

Call capitol armory or silencershop and they will be able to explain the process to you and discuss options for your intended calibers.

My advice is to get a lightweight option because heavy cans suck. For your intended purpose, I personally would choose the rugged alaskan Ti.

threading is pretty easy and affordable (less than the cost of the tax stamp), but pick your shop/gunsmith well, apparently they don't all take the time to set up the concentricity off the right points, which can lead to baffle strikes. Kampfield, LRI, Shaen, PVA, and thunderbeast are known for doing good muzzle threading, there may be others.

click around on silencershop, look for a titanium can that can handle .35, read some reviews on pew science, and pick the one that suits your needs the best.

Thanks for that.

My dad had a decent shotgun (say $5K O/U) drilled and tapped for choke tubes and they messed it up. Musta been fun for the guy to argue with my old man who was a machinist for many years. Prep and set-up are key.

silencer central, banish 30 suppressor. call them and they'll explain everything to you and then do all the paperwork and such for you. just ordered mine through them and it couldn't be easier. wait time is 8 months right now.

Big fan of Bowers group VERS system. They have a number of bore diameters that should fit the bill for many platforms. Combined with their Wilson combat whisper adapter and the Wilson rapid thread brake system you should have all the flexibility under the sun. Have fun!
Thank you! Still pretty clueless regarding the suppressors, will check those out.

If you can find a shop with a silencer shop kiosk, the process is pretty easy. Set up a e forms account with the atf, upload finger prints, picture with the kiosk. Then either select a silencer from the shops inventory or order one from silencer shop. the shop will have to get it into stock before they can file the atf paperwork, then wait 9+ months to take it home.
the other option is silencer central, they will mail you a fingerprint card and you send it back completed. Once they get your paperwork uploaded, then they file with the atf. Once it’s approved they will mail it to you. Adds about 1 month over silencer shop, but it shows up at your door.
now what can to get? First you will get more, so this won’t be a one and done. depending on who you buy from will determine what’s available. Bowers group, Banish, AB, Dead air all seem to make good 35 cal rifle cans. I got a AB raptor 10 stack 375 for my 35 cal guns. Seems to work well and is fairly light. Can be run as a direct mount or with a reflux. Reflux adds weight, but makes in 1-3 db quieter. Reflex is probably not needed for hunting , but nice for bench work. I like it enough that I am going to get a second one, just not sure if it will be another 375 or a dedicated 30 cal. I have many more 35 cal rifles that 30/7mm.

That can won't work with the cartridges he wants to shoot.

Make sure you get a trust set up when you do it. I have no experience with other companies, but Silencer Shop makes it easy.
