Vertical speed going up the hill?

The older I get the slower I go. Nothing to do with being in worse or better shape, I am just more thorough. Hiking through a canyon that I haven't thoroughly glassed is just asking to blow out game. When I was younger I felt the need to get to a certain spot and then start getting serious about hunting. I am now hunting my way to a spot, and seeing a ton of animals I would have normally hiked right past.

And some of your paces listed here are impressive and just confirm I'm slow on the hill. But that's ok.

It is ok! As mentioned to many variables in the mix. Throw in altitude and elevation gain game changes. In the mountains speed can kill you so can being too slow. There’s an old saying “A mile in the city is two miles in the mountains”. Get in as good as shape as you can and enjoy your pace and the surroundings. I have slowed down over years but I am seeing more and enjoying more. Slow but steady as it were.

If I had to measure my pace it would fall between growing grass and glacial creep.

Ha! Puts me somewhere about tectonic shift! LOL

I think I do ok, and I'm capable of getting out and hunting and I'm happy with that. But I hear guys mentioning big numbers like 15-20 miles in, and that's huge for me to think about, which is why I ask...just to kinda see where I rank and what I'm reasonably capable of. If I had to guess, over Kodiak terrain 15-20 would take me a lot of daylight, or two short days. Heck maybe more.

I'm getting more and more into cardio/real world training (compared to my usual, "I lift things up and put them down" i-lift-things-up-and-put-them-down.jpg routine) so I'll start logging myself on my GPS and seeing what it says and keep trying to improve on that.

You got a good pace, the less steps you can take the longer you will last. Going fast cross country usually causes you to take more steps and make more commotion :)

I have to say the speed at which I do my training hikes versus what I do while hunting are totally different. I move a short distance, stop, glass, look, listen, and repeat until I get to where I want to be unless I'm on an animal when hunting.
