I just ordered a Variflame II breech plug for my TC Omega. My local gun store has Large Rifle primers in stock but no Large Magnum Rifle primers. I am currently shooting 84 gr by weight (120 gr./volume) of BH209. Using this load, will the regular Large Rifle primers work or do I need to have the "Magnum" primers? On the EABCO website it said to use the Magnum primers when using BH209. What do you guys think? Have any of you used the regular Large Rifle primers with BH209? Thank for any advice and help in advance.

They’ll work.

250 Lg Rifle Mag . . . Flame Temp 3717 . . . Gas Volume 11.97

209 . . . Flame Temp 3024 . . . Gas Volume 21.98

Thanks for the info. Looks like the Large Rifle primer and a basic 209 like have been using are the same temp.

I use Cci magnum large rifle primers on the veriflame ignition in my ACCURA MRX with 76 grains, by weight, of bh 209 powder and it works fine.
The spent veriflame cartridges do come out black which makes me wonder if I am getting some blowback!!!!!
I’d like to get sub 1” groups at 100 yards but, am not there currently, and are wondering if that (blowback) is contributing to the larger spread?

I haven’t bit the bullet and tried the large rifle magnum primers yet for fear of blow back. Even though I have the Variflame 2 breechplug ready to go. I have the possibility of going to Nebraska next year for a muzzleloader hunt in December. I’ve always had really good luck with Win 209 primers. Would the Large rifle magnum primers be better in the cold Nebraska weather I’m likely to see?

I think mag 209s (Fed 209A or CCI 209M) would be the best choice.
