Variable Power Scope and Hunting Magnification

I have a 5 - 25 that sits on 20x at the range and was dialed down to 10x for both my Mule Deer and Elk shots earlier this month.

I have a 3x15 and usually leave it on 3-4x until I see the animal through the scope.

What is everyone’s preferred baseline magnification on your variable power scope? Do you have it set on 4x? 6x? I generally keep mine set on 4x and zoom if necessary. I ask because I’m taking my son youth hunting this weekend and I think 5x magnification on FFP reticle (Burris Veracity PH) will be just about right for him to pick up the rifle and shoot out to 300 yards.

I have a NXS 2.5-10x on my rifle and always pack it on 4x for me and 5x for my wife or daughter, and 4x is what I shot my buck with yesterday (probably 125-150yds off my pack stood upright) I will bump up to 6-7x for longer shots, and zoom in until I can see but still have good fov

On a FFP scope, probably 6x, but maybe down to 4x. I don’t hunt with SFP scopes, but if I did, probably lowest magnification
