I’m camping with the family next week on the north end of Vallecito Reservoir. How’s the fishing there? Google says trout will be near the bottom and pike in the shallows. Any truth in that? I’d love to catch a pike but I’ve got no idea where to start, and the kids will be happy catching anything. I’ll have a canoe and kayaks so we can get around away from shore. Thanks in advance!

Good luck fishing, there’s at least a thousand people there daily right now. There a daily use fee just to park next to the reservoir as well.
Sounds like it’s on your to-don’t list. My kids are young and with short attention spans, so we’ll likely not spend hours fishing, just focusing on morning and evening.

I agree. Go to Lemon Resevoir. I’ve caught more fish at Lemon just fishing from the bank than I ever have at Vallecito. Another good option over by Pagosa is Williams Creek Resevoir.

I concur on Lemon over Vallecito! Also, take the kids to “Baked” down in Bayfield… great for breakfast or lunch and some of the best homemade pastries you’ll ever find!

I didn’t make it over to Lemon, as the group wanted to stay close to camp and let the kids play rather than spend time driving. But we still got some fishing in and I caught my biggest trout in 30 years, maybe ever.

We stayed there in one of those cabins on the East side a few years ago. I took an inflatable out on that side and had decent fishing. We went to Lemon too but didn't catch anything there. Its a nice area and I plan to go back.
