Hey everyone, I purchased as spike elk tag for the general season in Utah (oct 5 - 17), and I was hoping to get any advice to point me in the right direction. I understand that the elk hunting in UT is not at the same level as the surrounding states. My goal is more of getting out this year to gain some experience than it is harvesting an animal. Could anyone suggest any units to take a look at? My plan, as of now, is to get as far away from roads/other people and glass for as long as I can. Where should I focus? Any helpful readings to learn more about the animals?

Thanks in advance.

I’d try the wasatch or manti units.
Both are big units & have big elk herds.
You’ll find & see elk, just hard to find a spikey

I wouldn't go so far to say Utah is not at the same level as surrounding states unless you mean that in a good way.
I can't recommend where in the state to go but hopefully the guy that PM'd you can. Just wanted to remind you that you can also take a cow Elk during the spike hunt if the opportunity presents it's self.

He's hunting general rifle so no cow. Cow is only legal during archery.

I guess you are correct. I was reading an online article about OTC Utah hunts that said the following: "In Spike Elk only units, the permit allows Spike Bull elk or any antlerless elk (cow or calf) to be taken. " But the writer must have been talking about the Archery hunt though in that statement he wasn't specific but a attached table does say during the rifle hunt only spike bulls can be taken.

I wonder though if a Antlerless Elk permit might also be purchased if after purchasing a spike permit? I bought a any weapon, Any bull permit and there appeared to be a option to also purchase a antlerless elk tag for something over 2 hundred dollars. However, I chose instead to purchase the 93 dollar antlerless Elk control tag.

Antlerless is a draw deal except for the control tags. Not all units have cow tags available. Not sure about NR but as a resident we can get up to 3 elk tags only one being a bull tag.

If you have a cow tag and a buck or bull tag in the same unit as the cow tag one can fill the cow tag during the buck or bull hunt even though the cow tag might list another season date. In other words were I hunt if I draw a Dec cow tag I can hunt cow during the Sept muzzy deer hunt, Oct bull hunt and then during the Dec cow hunt listed on the tag as long as I have a buck and bull tag. I'm not sure if all this applies to control tags so check the regs on that.

I will say when it comes to Utah a lot of articles, YouTube video's and other media gets things wrong. Not sure why as Utah seems to be a fairly straight forward state but there is a lot of miss information out there.
