So I went on the Utah F&G site yesterday and applied for my 2020 hunts. While applying it stated I had a current license and did not need to buy another to apply. Later in the day I got another email from the Utah F&G saying:

Your hunting license will expire on February 29. Don’t miss a day of great hunting!
Extend your license now — before it expires — and you’ll be ready to:
Apply for Utah's 2020 big game hunts (from Jan. 30 to March 5)

Now I'm confused and I can't remember if Utah is like AZ and you can get away with one license for 2 years? I really don't care either way, but sure wish they were just clear in their messaging and didn't say two contradictory things in the same day!

Yes it's good for 365 days so with a bit of pre-planning it'll get you two years of applications.

My understanding is you only need the license to apply for big game, unless you plan to hunt small game or birds you don’t need it in the field.

That's correct you'll need a current valid license to apply for tags but if you draw a tag you don't need a current license during your hunt.

I believe there will be a couple proposals to close the 365 loop hole and make everyone buy license every year. Until then enjoy your 2 for 1 opportunity.

Thanks guys! That's what I was thinking, but their messaging had me confused.

might want to call the dwr to double check. there have been a lot of loop holes getting closed in the last few years. you definitely need one to apply but i'd want to confirm before you leave for your hunt if a valid license is required at the time of the hunt or just the tag.

If anything its money maker for them, keeps people applying dispite the abysmal odds.

A few years back my license lapsed after draw results but before tags were issued. They won't send the tags you draw if your license isn't current. Makes sense.
