On my CO archery hunt last year, my base layer was an UnderArmour Cold Gear long-sleeve shirt with my outer layer being a Tuo 250 merino wool sweatshirt. For the couple times it rained, I used a Tuo Aptitude uninsulated jacket that kept me dry and warm. Pretty much the same with my lower layers - UnderArmour Cold Gear leggings and Wrangler ATGs.
That I can recall, I never got cold, never really got hot. Did get a little wet on the lower body in the rain but it dried pretty quickly.
Outside of saving weight, is there any advantage I might be missing by using a wool baselayer rather than the U/A stuff? I have a couple so smell never was an issue, which is what I can see the issue being.
