looking at purchasing a pair of used Kenetrek's. I have a couple of questions about model's and sizing. With a heavy wool sock a size 10 is about right normally. Also I have a wider, flatish foot. How would a 10.5 M fit?

Also wonder about the the Desert guide boot vs the extreme mountain. Would the desert guide be enough boot for late season in the Rocky mtn region?

Thx

I have Uninsulated Mt Extremes that fit me true to size with a heavy cushion Darn Tough sock. I have similar feet to you and use the normal width boot with green superfeet insoles. I couldn't tell you how many miles I have on them...5+ year's worth of heavy use. Best boots I have ever had. That being said, I would find a brick and mortar close to you that sells them and try them on. People seem to either love or hate Kenetreks, particularly the heel cups. Sizing up, even a 1/2 size, might tend to create some heel slippage for you.

The other day I tried on the mountain extremes and the sales guy at Scheel's told me to get them a half size smaller due to stretching. He ordered a full size smaller...on recommendation from his co-workers...and he said he wished he only went a half size smaller.

Specifically I am wondering how narrow are the "M". Seem's like almost all of them I see are a "M". Is that what an average or slightly wider foot would fit?

I measure out between medium and wide. I don't usually buy wide, and I am usually fine with mediums, maybe buy a size up to get the width. I have a pair of Kenetreks that are "M" and sized right for length and they are a bit narrow in my opinion. Don't go by me, since my feet give me a hard time, but my situation is similar enough to your that I couldn't not comment.

Update on Kenetrek sizing...as far as length. I bought a pair recently and exchanged them for a smaller size. My foot measures right at a 10, so I bought a size 10. After wearing them around the house for a few nights, I felt there was too much slippage. I exchanged them for a size 9. I decided 9 was the right size for ME. So my recommendation is to try on Kenetreks in a half size to a full size smaller than what your foot measures.

Fortunately for me I live in Bozeman (where kenetreks headquarters is located) and was able to drive to their location and try on whatever I wanted. The last 5 sets of boots I have bought for various tasks (hunting, motorcycle riding, casual, work) have all been 11 wides. When I tried on the kenetrek hardscrabbles in wide they felt perfect with a mid weight sock but I was worried that they would loosen over time and I would end up with too loose of a boot. I walked out of there with 11 regulars with the idea they would break it. Well, 2 very painful weeks later they finally did and now they fit perfect. The 11 wides would have been too wide for me and I am very glad I went with the regulars. Boots have been amazing so far, but it you do what I did make sure you take it easy for the first couple weeks, condition the leather and wear them all day everyday. They are a very stiff and durable boot and do take a while to break in. Good luck and I hope this helps
