Let's be honest... if a famous athlete had said something along the lines of "I don't agree with everything my country does, but I still love it" right after the Afghanistan pullout debacle, many of us wouldn't have blinked an eye at the "political" nature of the comment, and would probably have sung their praises for speaking truth to power.
We all see the world through our confirmation-bias-colored glasses. It's just human nature.
More to the point: That may literally be the best hockey game ever... and the fact that the guy who won it in OT got his teeth knocked out earlier in the game is amazing. And also just hockey.
Growing up playing hockey in Michigan (and Ontario) there were plenty of bumper stickers that read: "Give Blood, Play Hockey"
Sidebar: Not sure I agree about the correlation between intelligence and playing hockey...
Many of those Team USA players have now returned to their homes in Canada and will play their hearts out for their team and fan base... just like the Team Canada players who have come home to America to do the same. We are nations bonded in brotherhood, and if we forget that, a world of hurt awaits us at the hands of other nations (who don't hand out stuffed animals to the losers).
Speaking of... WTF with the stuffed animals?
