What are some commonly held beliefs in the hunting world that you don’t agree with?

Personally I’ve always thought that “buy the best glass you can afford” was just clever marketing by optics companies. Mid range glass is perfectly suitable for almost everyone and can save you thousands of dollars you can spend on tags or other gear
Could not agree more. I feel like most people pumping high end optics are just trying to make themselves feel better about the thousands of dollars they have spent.

Unpopular opinions:

eastern hunting can be just as enjoyable as western hunting.

.270, .308, 7mm mag are fine 99% of the time.

It’s ok to wash your hunting clothes with detergent.

Public land isn’t “yours”, treat it like a community resource.

Sitting over bait isn’t hunting.

Cera coat it awesome and durable.

It’s absolute junk imo
I’m not gonna lie this is the first time I’ve heard someone say something like this about Ceracoat. I personally haven’t put my rifle that’s coated through the wringer but I know people who constantly use the rifles between competitions and hunting and haven’t had anything bad to say about it. That being said my friends and I drive out west across multiple states to get our guns coated at LRI in Sturgis so it may very well be the people that apply it?

Idk
It could be expections but I’ve had like 6 rifles done all by different people. And I’m not saying I baby my rifles.

But within just a few trips out it definitely always has some kind of chips, dents, scratches. Etc maybe not terrible.

But it doesn’t live up to the hype imo

My Unpopular opinion #1: An OK ribeye beats the best elk steak 100% of the time. No shade on game meat, but beef tastes much better, no matter how you try to justify it. Fat=flavor

My Unpopular opinion #2: by the end of season, no matter how it goes, I’m grateful to be done hunting. That feeling lasts about 30-45 days, then I’m excited again and looking forward to next season.

My Unpopular opinion #3: bait fishing sucks. It’s an excuse for lazy people to go out and drink beer somewhere other than sitting in their lazy boy.

Ok I’m done insulting everyone now 😂

EDIT: realizing I misunderstood the assignment. Either way, these are MY unpopular opinions that go against common held hunting industry positions/opinions. In case that wasn’t clear haha.

Running deer dogs isn’t “real” hunting!

Crossbow hunters aren’t “real” bow hunters!

Personally, I don’t care how you hunt, as long as it’s legal. Just wanted to throw these out there.

Waterproof and breathable is the widely held belief due to marketing.

Reality is waterproof OR breathable.

I’ve got about 15 years of kayaking in a goretex drysuit that is STILL dry (after the occasional send in for pinholes and replacing gaskets). It can be done, works well with waders too. You have to be careful with things that can puncture like thorns etc, which is why much of the lighter weight gear doesn’t stay waterproof for long- there isn’t much protecting the goretex layer. Of course the heavier other layers of fabrics are to protect the goretex, also reduce breathability. In dry suits, you get much more reinforcement in seat/knees/elbows for durability, but less in other areas for less weight/breathability. I’ve got goretex motorcycle gear that has seen some serious weather as well that is dry as well. I do have “packable” breathable rain gear that sucks though, so I’ll agree on that.

My unpopular opinions.

My state IS full.

.30-06 is overrated in 2025.

You will benefit from the best glass you can afford.

My pickup is a rig.

I "run" gear.

Grip and grins aren't the end of hunting

You can be proud of what ever animal you kill, but don't justify road hunting the first fork n horn you see just to shit on people who are selective in what they kill. Or don't shoot the first yearling you see just to say "it aint much but I need the meat "
