Unlimited PTO?!?

We call it Flex Time. We transitioned to it a few months back, but no one tracked the limited PTO we had before for salaried associates anyway, so it really hasn’t changed much where I work. I manage a team of 12 and as long as they are getting their work done, I don’t care how much time they take off or where they work from. A great perk if like said before the culture at the company supports it.

The company has really good employe reviews but I’m convinced people are masochists

When I worked public safety
We started the year with 3 personal days, could carry over 3 days if I remember right. So 6 days off the bat.
Holidays if you worked could be saved as a day off, (which I did) or taken as time and a half. A day off at straight time was worth more to me than time and 1/2.
Vacation was earned, and at increasing amounts for length of service.
Sick time was in a separate "account" from all the above.
And, I worked a set schedule, every Monday and Friday 24 hours. So most holidays fell on these days. I'd take a day and be off a week.
We could also "sell" unused personal days back to the county.
Give you an idea of how much time I have/had. I retired close to 7-8 years ago. I went back into the job part time still in the state retirement system, so I kept my time. I have roughly 900 hours sick time and like a 150 hours vacation time.
Its confusing but, this is as close to unlimited time as I've heard of.

I'm so illiterate, I read half way through this thread trying to figure out what PTO stood for. PAID TIME OFF if their is anyone else as slow as me.🤪🤪

And when you work at company with a lot of them who take minimal PTO, you can be that outlier that the bright light shines upon.

Employers do it because it is pretty well-documented that employees under unlimited PTO schemes take less PTO than those who accrue based on a schedule, and employers who use it do not need to accrue PTO which in some states needs to be paid when an employee leaves. I funded ~3 months of household expenses based on my PTO payout when I retired.

I wouldn't call it "unlimited" PTO, but we have untracked PTO. Basically what others are saying, I just get my time off in the calendar as early as possible. Taking somewhere between 5-6 weeks this year. I do get crap from one of the older superintendents. It does feel more like asking for a favor than something you have a right to.

I went from finally accruing 6 weeks paid after 15 years at the company, to them giving everyone unlimited PTO. I’ve now been with them 20 years and it’s a great system for both employees and employer.

I’m taking 3 weeks of November off this year to hunt (Minnesota and Arizona) and spend time with family over thanksgiving. I’ll be off from December 22nd to January 2nd. We usually take 2-3 weeks in the summer for family vacations. I take a lot of 3 and 4 day trips for backpacking, scouting, camping, jeep trips, hunting varmints, etc.

I am more much more productive having unlimited time off. Getting back to work after long breaks is super motivating and feels refreshing to be back at times. It also makes it not feel as bad when I work 80-100 hours weeks while on the road traveling.

It’s part of my compensation package I signed up for when taking the job. Personally, I would give up my PTO and get paid for an additional 200 hours a year and just take the time unpaid. Last year I gave back 80 hours of it. Until they decide to pay me more, I will gladly take that time and get paid for it.

It would also be nice to be able to send my employer the bill for the 60 to 70 hour work weeks I put in for 6 months last year because they refused to give me 5000 more to get someone hired.

Yes, PTO is nice but it comes at a price.

"Unlimited PTO" is like how they don't need to post speed limits on a bad forest service road. The work is often unlimited too.

I've worked in a job where it required constant availability, working every weekend, and most nights. Not worth it to me, so I took a pay cut and entered a track where my significant education and experience don't apply. But now I get weekends and they have to pay me to be on call.
