Unit 33 from opening day of august to opening day of muzzle loader.

Just a few quick questions and let me remind you we are going in blind never been here before and we are not able to scout in advance.


During the opening two weeks of bow season what elevations should I be mainly hunting. Are the elk up high or down low.

Also we are avid fisherman have any of you taken a rod with you and if so is it worth packing in and out. It only ways a pound or so but we would like to catch a few trout for dinner while we are there.

Small game from what I am seeing there is nothing in season this time of year no grouse or squirrel am I reading this right.

If anybody has hunted this unit and knows some nice area to camp I would love to talk and again any info is greatly appreciated.

Go high if you can. I've hunted the neighboring unit. Stick to dark cover, north and east facing if possible. Glass early and often. I've seen herds of cows and younger Bulls down very low too - a mile away at least when spotted and feeding into cover so thick you'd never get close without them hearing you. Water sources of course are key. The rain has been abundant, but that unit can be more arid than most.

I've seen herds of cows and younger Bulls down very low too - a mile away at least when spotted and feeding into cover so thick you'd never get close without them hearing you. Don't worry about a specific number for elevation because the elk tend to forget to strap on their altimeters. There is always elk ranging in elevation, some like to be high on the mountains some like to be low (that's where the high low comes in). Typically the elevation is to make the hunter feel good, whether you want to sit high and glass alpine meadows or do you want to be in thicker timber low with sporadic meadows.

If you're planning on hunting elk forget the fishing rods and forget small game hunting, what'll happen is you'll get tired of hiking and figure heck I can take a day off and fish, when that could be the day to kill an elk. You should only have time to hunt elk and sleep.

Yeah your right about not fishing but I have never been out west before so I do want to take full advantage of my time and see some nice scenery at least for a day. Thanks for the advice on the elevation, it does make sense and I appreciate that. Makes me feel a little better about going in blind. Guess we will just have to get lucky when we get tired of driving and set up camp.

We are just south of savannah in Richmond Hill on the coast.

Yeah your right about not fishing but I have never been out west before so I do want to take full advantage of my time and see some nice scenery at least for a day. Thanks for the advice on the elevation, it does make sense and I appreciate that. Makes me feel a little better about going in blind. Cool I grew up northwest of Atlanta, been to savannah before but haven't spent a lot of time there.

You're gonna see plenty of nice scenery when your hunting lol. But if you do want to fish I think I would leave my rod in the truck and only use it when I am dedicating a day to it. I wouldn't pack it because the temptation may be too much if you find a nice stream.

For the first week of the season I plan on hitting the river with my fly rod every day I'm up there. September is the best fishing of the year, just happens during archery as well so there is a tradeoff. I also find that even a 1/2 day of fishing can really rejuvenate me for another 4-5 days of hard hunting.

yeah but we will only be there till the 12th. Oh well no big deal.

If you're up high enough you'll see plenty of Blue Grouse and the season opens Sept 1st, but you'll need a small game license. I assume you have the combo if you're fishing as well.
