Hi Guys - first year hunting out west and drew Unit 24 elk in the random draw. I'm really excited but a bit overwhelmed as I didn't expect to draw this tag. Has anyone hunted this unit recently? I'd really like to take one with my bow - anything 250" and up is a trophy for me.

I drew it in the random. Really lucky. Would love to get everyone's view on hunting the last week of Sept archery and opening rifle vs hunting one week in mid Sept during prime rut (i think the 12th is prime rut start).

That unit particularly. . . No, but I've hunted cows near by and have a relative that lives close.

Shoot me a p.m. and I'll share what I can

Congrats on the tag! I drew a couple cow tags with no points this year. No experience in 24 but when I hunt elk in WY I've had the best luck in the last 2 weeks of Sept and first 2 weeks of rifle. If I could only hunt 2 weeks it would be the last week of Sept and the first week of rifle.

I think you will have multiple opportunities at the size class that will get you excited. Congrats on a good tag. If I had two weeks to hunt, and it wasn't inconvenient to split them, I would hunt the week of September 14th and then come back for the rifle if needed. The week of the 14th will be dark moon and the rut should be really going so daytime activity should be awesome if it's not hot out. Full moon October 1st will mean a lot more night activity so may be challenging. That won't be as big of a deal during rifle but for archery it could really impact your hunt.

If you have 2 weeks to hunt and go the last week of archery thru 1st week of rifle you'd almost have to not get out of bed to find a 250" bull. Archery is archery so killing one is always the hard part if you've not done it much, but if you are there for a week before rifle opens it should be easy to be on one of that caliber or better on opening day. I would't overthink it too much and make it harder than it is. Get out there and learn it for a week with your bow and maybe get a good shot and if not it will be easy to find a bull with the rifle with your expectations. If you said you were holding out for 320" in that unit without a ton of experience it might be a different story.

I'm starting to research a hunt for next year to Wyoming and 24 is on my radar. I'd love to hear how your hunts turned out if you don't mind sharing?
