223 Wylde or 6x45

Interesting. Shaw might have dropped a run of the portless .223 on sale at $189 right now. Get one if that's what you want to do. I might order one myself since it is in stock rather than waiting to build.

I would still be less through the group buy after shipping.

But, with this available, maybe I stick with 6x45 from Shaw and/or keep working to find less expensive alternatives.

Makes sense. On that note: how many of you are mostly interested in a lighter option than the Shaw? I have one, so I'm more interested in a 16oz option, and I'm wondering how many of you are in the same boat(223 only question)? Either way, the plugged BCA works, but a portless 16oz stainless sure would be nice!

I just talked with Shaw. They didn't expect to sell out so soon. They will have the 16" portless as a standard offering going forward. So, buy that barrel now if you want it while it is on sale. No need for me to do the group buy.

Full steam ahead on the 6 x 45 barrel from Shaw. I got the ball rolling with the official request. Updates to come.

I am still working on a source for the less expensive nitride option and the 12" portless barrels in .223 and 6x45.

Sounds good. Didn't you say BCA is working on a portless one?

Can't wait for the 6x45!

Other question: what is the consensus on whether the BCA bolt action is suitable for bolt gun level ARC loads?

Can one of you help me before lunch?

I know there is discussion in these threads about optimal barrel contour thickness, but I am swamped today.

I set a call with the sub $100 barrel maker later today and I am heading into a meeting, and would like to have the barrel thickness for the BCA. And, where the contours begin and end on the chamber end.

I have the approximate wall thickness for the BCA.

Also, if you can find the diameter for the A1 contour, that's where I can start the discussion with him.

I'll add the other dimensions in a few minutes

My BCA reaches 0.500" diameter at 2.6" from the rear of the ramp.

Can you verify that your 2.6" with calipers? I had 2.724" but i don't have the BCA disassembled to measure right now. And, can you or anyone verify that the thinnest part of the barrel over the chamber is about .983"?
I have a revised drawing that's much less embarrassing almost complete and it should actually be lighter than the BCA, because the Shaw actually tapers down to .490", and so I'm using that since they have been shown to be trustworthy.
The measurements around the chamber remove a lot of meat, so weight, but we don't want to go below what we've already tested to be safe in that area (BCA dimensions).

Maybe barrel wall thicknesses would be useful in your discussions with the people making them. It seems that they all have their own minimums but that varies quite a bit.

BCA is going down to 0.138" wall with theirs, Wilson goes down to 0.135" or even 0.133 (I think my Wilson Ultralight 5.56 was around 0.49" diameter which would be a 0.133" wall). I -think- X-Caliber will go all the way to 0.131" (0.338 bore in their 0.60 Spaghetti contour)

Seems like a 0.138" wall makes for a barrel that's plenty light and is -well- within what barrel makers are using. 0.50" diameter for a 223 barrel and ~0.52" diameter for a 6mm barrel.

The Shaw is .133" right before the step up to the threads. FWIW
