Ultralight Ultralight Rifles

This is a bit OT but how are you guys doing out West with the seriously heavy winds? Not easy to shoot with sand blowing in your UL UL. Be Well Brothers, BG.
Keep it under 300 yards with 15+mph winds. Any stronger wind and just use it as cover to get closer. Anything below either of those figures, just practice more and get good data out to however far you want to shoot. I posted my 300 yard shooting in about 15mph cross wind. And 10ish mph out to 590. Both videos can be found in this thread.

Same here, were I do most of my hunting in the mountains or the thick rainforest, high winds just means I can stalk in closer.

When I have gone east and hunted the prairie, that's a different situation, and I am not bringing a UL rifle.

Those strait pull handles that wrap around the side got me inspired to have a more weatherproof/debris proof rifle, so I got a Roam, built this titanium charging handle, and put an ultralight dust cover on her.
Right now it has 3 layers of heat shrink for grip, we'll see if it stays put in the field.
It's about 1/3" out of full battery in the pic because I have a spent case stuck in the Ackley chamber and I'm hunting around for my brass rod.
I can stay in the scope and not get hit by it so I think it's a success. Any critiques/improvement ideas are appreciated.
I might epoxy a knurled(?) Aluminum knob on there instead of the heat shrink, but it was an easy trial.

Edit* 1.4x ounces
Added a pic of the inboard section. It's all one piece that perches on a spacer, which also works as a bolt stop to the rear. It was a lot of fun heating and bending the titanium, but it wasn't easy making the round stock flat for the screw holes. Once the ti work hardens it doesn't want to move, or even be ground down very effectively. Amazing stuff. You get it red hot and hit it with a hammer immediately, then it's much harder subsequent rounds. Bending it is pretty easy, just don't get it too hot. The round stock weighs half of the square bar, so it was worth the effort.

Were any of you also wishing these handles in the pic would work with a shortened bolt/solo bolt?
I added some more rambling and a pic to the previous post. I don't think we get any kind of notification when someone edits a post do we?

Is the case being stuck at all related to the extraction power of the new CH?

Nope, sadly I've fired zero rounds so far in this barrel, been too busy. It was just in there for a function test of the new reliabolt. Shouldn't have grabbed an already fired case...
I think my design has a much more robust 'hammer on' durability, but maybe less direct pull extraction pressure due to the flexible titanium.

Really well done! You bent that return perfectly, and that has got to be ULUL.
It opens up possibilities, the charging handle could be on either side by flipping it at the carrier attachment. Is it hard drilling the titanium rod where you flattened it?

Thanks, I might end up shortening the run on it to make it even more rigid, but grade 5 6mm ti is about impossible to bend with bare hands, and that's if you were holding it with 2 hands and trying to bend it.
The drilling went pretty easy with cheap ti coated hss bits taking shallow pecks, low rpms, and lots of cutting oil. I started with the 1/16" then went full size. It's crazy hard work hardened ti there, but surprisingly not bad to drill.
Yup, easy to flip sides, and you could do a tiny handle with a slot like the guy on youtube did as well, but I'll be running hot ackley improved rounds and want as much rigidity and precip protection as I can get. Also, who would want to chop into a Roam upper, too expensive to wreck!

*or to put a permanent bend in it that is, you can flex it with bare hands

These would be sweet. But the only way to shave weight is an aluminum bcg

My 12 year old buddy got a grizzly with my ULUL rifle. I had it down to 5 lbs 9 oz with a minimalist stock and a Rugged Radiant suppressor in K configuration. For this hunt I actually added weight with a collapsible stock and the full length suppressor. This includes a 18.5 oz Trijicon 2.5-10 scope. Overkill maybe but I wanted a reliable scope and that is what I had. The SWFA 2.5-10 worked but i figured the Trijicon might be a tad more rugged and more usable overall. Kid made a perfect double lung shot at 70 yards. So far I'm really happy with it. Its cheaper and probably more ergonomic then a super light bolt action. I often carry it checking bear baits mid day when I don't really expect to see much but a long gun is nice to have. The 77 gr TMK worked but I am going to be different and say I wasn't blown away by it. I might consider something bigger. On the other hand, if I wanted to really move fast and get remote I might deal with it. Its noticeably easier to carry compared to my full sized rifles.
If you zoom in you can see i did two things to slim the rifle down. I trimmed the grip a but shorter to perfectly match my hand width. I mounted the scope low and ground down the back of the rail so the scope dial ring would have enough room. This moved the center of gravity down which is nice.

How's your Tegra working out?
Finally got this Tegra lower put together. In summary it was not at the quality level of my TNA poly lower but still a good option. Tegra was 3.75oz the TNA was 3.9
With the tegra the hole for the spring and detent pin for the front take down pin was not drilled out all the way so I had to finish drilling it out by hand. The rear take down pin hole on the far side is a little small, has to be tapped in with a mallet even when not attached to an upper. Alignment looks okay I think it’s just tight which is fine. Had to trim some plastic off the grip screw hole where it taps through the buttstock threads at the rear of the lower. Couldn’t thread the buttstock in well until I did. Grip screw threads are very tight which I like since there isn’t a brass insert. And the buttstock threads were plastic and had a good fit. I’ve only shot about 60 rounds of Hornady frontier 68gr hpbt through a new BCA ultralight barrel. 5 shot Groups were 3-3.5” at 100yds but my last BCA bbl shot that ammo about the same. Will test some different ammos when I get a chance. Need to spend some more time with it. But it functions well so far especially for a $35 lower.

What did you not like with the 77 tmk? Just curious.
