Ultralight Ultralight Rifles


Eight inch gong at 375 yards. Prone with ammo can and bag front rest, bino harness in the rear. It’s amazing what you can do with these 5x microprisms!
I didn’t film any shots but I banged some steel with a buddy out to 400 with the ULUL and 5x microprism last weekend. Holding wind and elevation gets a little tricky but agreed, very capable little optic!
 
18 mile round trip 4-wheeler ride on the roughest trail I have ridden. Nine miles with the ULUL in the gun rack, nine more strapped to a pack tied to the rack. Two days hiking the wind rivers in the middle. Never shot it up there, but thought I better check the zero when I got home. Smacked a 3 and 400 yard plates, then smacked the 800 yard plate first shot! Good enough for me!
This is with Shaw barrel and 5x microprism.

I was told this weekend that a 2.5-15 power scope is only good out to 400 yards. I didn’t know how to respond without saying that’s a bold face lie, so I just looked at him. My face must have said 1000 words though.
 
I'm actually working on something similar. I'm getting the gas system stuff together right now and trying to find the handguard I want second hand. Then get an adjustable gas key and I'm done.

I may be poor but I do ball.

Right now I'm right over 4lbs with a PA micro on it, the current junk drawer handguard, and an empty 20 round aluminum straight mag. I'd say the handguard is around 10-12oz guesstimate. I took it off and left the big barrel nut and it was noticeably lighter (no shit). Still has no gas system. Hopefully I'll be under 4lbs said and done. This is a toy that I've spent way too much money on.
 
I went ahead and windowed some ASC mags. At 2.37" the bullet tips of the 90 ELD-X touch the front of the mag well, but mags load just fine.

I loaded up 10 rounds with my hottest load of 25 gr H335 now with a COAL of 2.37 instead of sub 2.3" like it was with my first go round.

The good:
● My velocity average went up 90 fps.
Before 25 grains gave me 2515, and today I got 2604 fps.
● No more sticky bolt. Rounds fed and ejected very smoothly.

The bad:
● My group opened up. 10 rd group is roughly 3" across.
● I was punching primers on 6 of the 10 shots. Nothing to crazy. Just enough to let a little smoke seep out of the action. The ones that didn't punch through the primers are pretty heavily cratered.

So...

I'm going to make sure 2.37" doesn't have me jammed into the lands causing pressure spikes. If that's not the case, I will drop the powder charge down .4 or .5 grains and see if I can find an MOA accurate, non-pressurized load that will get me at leat 2550 fps.

Primers are CCI 400
My lower velocities were on some of the blown primers, so that average might have been higher without that malfunction

Something I've noticed recently if your loads are cratering (or even popping) primers:

The poly triggers seem like they allow cratering at lower pressures than steel triggers. I think it's the lack of inertia in the hammer that allows it (and the firing pin) to be pushed back more easily than a heavier steel hammer. Switching nothing other than the trigger from the poly to steel, I've noticed a couple of times now primers going from mild craters to zero craters and totally normal looking. So, if you're running loads that are on the edge with the poly trigger, it might be worth swapping in a steel trigger and see if that makes a difference.

In the bigger picture, NFA has closed and apparently not sure if they're going to continue, so the poly LPK may be gone for good anyway. They were actually an okay deal for just the lightweight pins, safety, etc., even if you weren't using the trigger itself.
 
Gasser upper is built, still waiting on TN Arms to find the time to process my order. 41.4 oz (2.58lbs) w/o optic. Mix of lightweight NOS, blem, or discount products to keep costs down. Room for a few more oz shavings but I wanted to retain the forward assist and didn’t feel like drilling out the barrel nut or trimming the handguard. Too cheap for a Ti gas block too.

The Trybe Magnite handguard is surprising at a measured 5.4oz including the barrel nut for a 12” handguard that costs all of $62. I don’t think there are any other factory handguards that beat that price/oz. (as long as it holds up).

Question: Anyone have an opinion on the PA 5x microprism reticle, mil or .223 bdc? 12% off right now with $80 PA bonus bucks which I could use towards lower parts. I have the .223 ACSS bdc on a PA 3x compact scope and don't have any problems with it.

I have the acss 223 reticle and like it. Works for the 55s out to 800 and the 73 grain eld Ms have same point of impact out to at least 400. Haven’t verified beyond that. Guys with the mil reticle say it’s more precise.

Thanks for the handguard tip. Might be a cheap option on an UL-UL. Maybe with the entire top removed like I did on an NFA handguard in build #1 on this thread.

My UL gasser is 3# 10oz. Looks like you could hit that weight pretty easily with lightweight lower parts.

It’s at 4lbs 0.7oz on a mil spec lower & LPK, A2 buffer tube, empty buffer, and Farrowtech stock so my guess is 3lbs 13oz with the carbon TN Arms lower and aluminum LPK. Hoping to hit the range next weekend and start tuning the thing.

Looking at those handguards with respect to UL-UL builds, they're almost as light as Kaw Valley PCC handguards as is. With the top portion removed like I did on the NFA version, I think they'd be even lighter than a Jag Composites...for 60 bucks, or so. Pretty good option.
