Another questions since this thread has most of the info on Ultralight and the various parts options.

TN arms carbon lower. FarrowTech butt and A2 buffer. I ordered the tap from farrow tech for the rear takedown retention pin hole. Tap is 4-40 and almost slides right in the hole without resistance. Screw doesn’t touch a thing.
Thinking either a 3mmx0.5 tap and screw or 6-32 tap and screw. Currently have an end plate on but it’s 0.5 oz and I would prefer more buffer thread in the lower.

Anyone done this on the carbon and know the size?

I did not order the tap, I just threaded the screw directly in, it was loose enough, I covered the back with superglue. No issues with 850+ rounds.

My other rifle has a smoke composite end plate. It weighs nearly nothing.

Dang those are light! 6-32 tap worked well and I clipped a little spring off since the screw took up some of the spring area.

Any recommendations for tripod ball heads for shooting these lighter rifles off of?

Seems like a lot of recommendations out there factor in heavier rifles and heavier recoiling cartridges. The Leofoto LH-30 comes up a good bit at 11oz ish and 33lb load capacity.

There are also the following:

LH-22 at 4oz ish and 11lb load capacity
LH-25 at 6oz ish and 13lb load capacity

I have this one, use it for my 6.5prc I have an arca plate on that is about 7 pounds loaded, and my spotting scope. I’m not an expert on tripod heads, but it was recommended by a friend and is the best one I have tried out of 10 or so that other friends have. I really like it and would see no reason to switch. The head is on a slik 624 so it’s pretty light and super compact. Never thought about a lighter head setup.

I have a bear creek pencil barrel.

I have a drill press.

Carbide end mill in .120” (#31) is 15.00.

6-48 tap is 15.00.

I have a bunch of 6-48 rail and sight screws.



What’s stopping me from using the end mill to open up gas port to thread it? I have just over .2” of wall thickness. Would need .14 depth to get full thread engagement.


Basically performing the same procedure as drilling and tapping a barrel for open sights.

There’s already a hole in the barrel.


Am I missing anything here? Cheap try at a non ported barrel. Thoughts?

That's what I did to my bear creek barrel. Only 10 rounds shot so far.

I tapped my gas port 4-40 and loctited a set screw in there. I assume it would have been fine but I put a sleeve over it too just in case.

I tried to do a lightweight build using a side charge Bear Creek upper and it would only work on 1 of 8 of my lowers. Best I could tell, it wasn’t milled concentric, so you couldn’t charge it. The BCG would just hit the side of the entry to the buffer tube. I haven’t braved trying another BC product.
Are there good alternatives that you all would recommend?

For 30 bucks I had to give it a go.

I bought a Quentin defense stripped upper and it looks like it is very well made. (100.00). Only problem with it, is that it’s probably twice as thick as it needs to be. It won’t win any weight contests…

Regarding JAG handguard "timing", any tips on getting this thing plumb? It comes with a guide but that relies on a gas port, which the Solo 300 obviously doesn't have. Photos below are aligned with the threads on the barrel nut.

I've never used JAG, but does the product come with a set of barrel shims? I have used many handguards that require these to properly align the top of the receiver rail with the top of the handguard.

Are you guys buying the 80% lowers from TNA, or the stripped receiver?
