ULTIMATE - SHORT BARREL CARTRIDGE???

Open ended question. For me anything recoiling that much to move a big pill that fast in a short barrel is hardly “ultimate”, quite the opposite. Shootability and ease a of spotting one’s shot should be a priority in the “ultimate” category.

I can't answer your question and I'm torn myself.

I have a LA Standard doner action that I'm looking to build a short barreled rifle for light hunting / target / long range trainer. I'm all over the map with it; 30-06AI, 243AI, 6-06AI, even a 6 Creed. Likely staying away from the barrel burners.

I have a 6.5 creed, 7PRC and 30NMI so I'm really covered but my thinking is a 30-06AI suppressed slinging 180's would be a great addition.

I also have two AR's; one with an 18" barrel suppressed and very accurate to 500 yards and a 10" SBR suppressed.

If I had a short doner action I'd be looking at a 223AI but that's not in the near future.

7 nmi will do it. Not sure why everyone is all of a sudden recoil soft. My 22” 28 nosler is running the 180 Berger at 3050 not maxed out. Kick isn’t bad at all

Hey,

Looking to build a short barreled long range gun. Wanting 2925 fps with 180 eldm but sub 20" barrel. Open to other options outside 7mm.

Options so far, 28 sherman mag, 28 nosler, 7-300prc.

Any ideas?
I know you are thinking 7mm but my favorite short barrel rifle I own is my 19” 300wsm shooting McGuire copper rose 168s at 3000fps not pushing too hard. With brake or scythe recoil is just a little push. Kills great, plenty of energy to 7-800 yards. My 9 year old can handle it with the can.

215 Bergers shoot great too but the gun is very lite weight and recoil is punishing to me. I just had shoulder surgery and I really start feeling recoil at 180 grain bullet weight.

6.8 Western. It’s everything the 7mm’s provide but in a short action further reducing your rifle weight. 165-175gr at 2900-3000fps.

Ammo is a little more challenging on many of these calibers but easily solved by jumping on ammoseek when you find what you like and bulk up.

I would look at a 6.5 PRC or 6UM; those are about the largest cartridges most people can still see their impacts with. I know some do not care about seeing their impacts, but once you start seeing them, you realize how beneficial it is.
What is your target weight for the entire setup?
