You're right. And I suppose in that case, as long as you are just looking for something that sits on top nicely to keep the heat in and you aren't going to try to use it to pour with or strain or anything, the MicroMo lid would work just fine!

I wonder if the Zip lid would be better. The reviews on Jetboil's site seem to indicate that.

I think the issue is that the shroud contacts the bottom of the fins pulling heat out of the fins.

Have you seen/done any testing on this? If this is true, then could I simply bend the bottom of the shroud down just enough to not contact the fins? It would also add wind resistance.

I just got mine in, so I may do some testing once I get my fuel canisters out tomorrow. Right now I'm trying to take off the handle attachment.

As to various pot lid weights (grams):
Petrel, MicroMo, Inferno aftermarket, take out lid upside down. Inferno doesn’t sit down into Petrel but it could be used. Upside down take out lid fits great but is a little wide. I think I’d be looking for a plastic or aluminum lid of sorts because the MicroMo isn’t much of a weight savings over the original Petrel lid. With some patience you could trim the outer rim off the take out lid. It would be about perfect and lose more weight.

Here's some quick and dirty testing I did. I wouldn't take any of the individual results as perfect, but the comparisons should be solid. In the end, I'm really happy with the 4th setup. Swapped handle and attachment for a MicroMo cozy (fits perfectly), swapped lid to a 32oz QT drink lid, and I bent the base of the legs on the stove until the top of the stove sat nearly flush with the bottom of the Petrel.

I ended up getting a 5g lid from the convenience store that fits slightly snugly over the cozy so that it doesn't come up while boiling. I just wish it was transparent instead of black, so I'm going to look for one of those.

I've got a bear hunt coming up in a couple of weeks. After that, I'm going to order another one and start monkeying around with the bottom of the shroud to see if it could both increase efficiency (by not touching the fins) and act as a partial wind screen.

Yes, I'll post a pic tonight. Pretty simply though, I just put the legs in their "extended/locked" positions (like you were going to put a pot on it), and then pushed down on the jagged portion while holding near the rotating base. I did this for each leg and checked it every time until the pot was low enough and level.

Is the hex on that petrel pot welded to the bottom of the support or just touching? If you can get that support bent down to act as a windscreen I bet will improve performance quite a bit. There's a lot of material to work with there.

The shroud is not attached to the HX fins. I already bent one shroud just a tiny bit, but wanted to leave it like that until I could test it with "wind".

Assuming all your tests are with only 1 variable changed - 4th test with the bent legs did not have a cozy?

Yes, only 1 variable changed. But no, the 4th test still has the cozy and the QT lid. I changed the one variable in subsequent tests.

Another tip - I really prefer using the Bic EZ Reach Candle lighter with this setup. It adds a little weight, but it more than makes up for it because you can put the pot on the legs and then turn the stove on and light it.

I updated the test names to be more clear. The original lid may have been more efficient than the QT lid, but I wouldn't read too much into that.

If you like the soto wind master with the tri plex it fits perfect in the petrel and the toaks ti 95mm lid old and new style fits the petrel but I prefer the old style lid with it

My absolute lightest and most efficient, workable cook system. Picture is with a UL aluminum lid, but the much more durable carbon fiber lid could be supplemented for a wt. penalty of 0.2 oz.
Total cost was about $45, and that includes the cost of the lighter.

That damn BRS stove keeps popping up despite my best efforts! It just PURGED fuel for me. I may have to retry.
