Was able to locate a few carbon fiber lids from Ruta Locura. These weigh in at 12 grams (almost a 50% weight reduction from the lid pictured above). They fit well!

I ended up cheating and just buying one from Josh as well, but mine weighs 13gr on my scale. So now the total weight, not including a lighter or fuel, is exactly 5 1/2 oz. I still have a piece of carbon fiber coming in that I’ll play around with a little, but that 6 gr. aluminum lid looks to be the ticket, and at only $9, that’s a no-brainer.

How much surgery would be required on the Sterno pot to use with the Soto stove? I have the Soto windmaster stove (currently use with a toaks pot) and also have the old JetBoil Flash. I've been considering hacking up the Flash pot fins to fit with the Soto since the efficiency with the toaks sucks, especially in even light breeze. The Sterno is cheap and I'd like to keep the JB untouched for use at fish camp and base camps.
Did you figure this out? I have a Soto Windmaster where I initially modified the 4 leg support to work with a Micro Mo and it works perfectly with the Sterno pot as well. Just a modification to the support and the pots remain untouched.

I havent yet, but your post makes me more confident it will work. I'll probably order up the sterno pot and see what I can do.

I cut them off a little long with snips and finished to size on a belt sander.

Hi BBob... quick question. Do you expect that the sterno inferno pot will hold up to the output of the soto windmaster stove? 10 minutes into this vid, the pot melted on the gas stove.

That MSR Superfly (I used to own one) has a much larger diameter burner than the Windmaster so I can see how it overheated the pot where it did using it like that. With the modified pot support the Windmaster sits high up under the pot with the smaller burner right under the bottom. At full throttle I'd bet the Windmaster would still melt it but you don't need to run it anywhere near full throttle to get good performance out of that combo. It's sort of a judgement call at how high to run it but it wasn't a problem for me and I'd say I ran it at a bit less than half output. I put my hand right up next to the vented ring to judge how hot it was and adjusted the output from that. I can't remember the exact times right now (I posted in a thread somewhere the time and the amount of fuel used to get to a boil) but that pot with the Windmaster at partial throttle will equal or beat my Jetboil MicroMo. I've since switched to the BRS for my lightest setup. I've also trimmed the BRS pot supports to make it easier to slip the pot on and off and I don't run it full throttle either to get best performance out of it.

My current setup shown below. The folding cup is a Sea to Summit. I have a neoprene sleeve for it but I haven't got around to modifying it to make a handle work yet. Once I do that I'll remove the original handles from the pot and use the sleeve.

Thanks for your response BBob. At present, I've been experimenting with the Windmaster and the Kathmantu Ascent Solo pot with a heat exchanger bottom. The pot holds up well to the stove, but sits a bit far away from the stove top. Currently burning thru 8g of fuel for 2 cups at 1.40m.

Was inspired by this guy here

What I really liked about your approach was that it kept the over size of things small.

So, have ordered an Inferno cup and we'll see how that goes when it rocks up.

Otherwise, I also have a triflex inbound which I think might fit the insides of the Jetboil Flash cup....so can test that too....

Cheers

Smaller is always welcome and seems to be a byproduct of getting things lighter and efficient. As my pack weight has shrunk pack size has shrunk as well. My optics load has gotten heavier and bulkier so something had to give :)

One thing the modified Windmaster has going for it is in windy conditions with it tucked up high inside the heat exchanger and with it's burner design it does really well in wind. That combo worked better than a standard Jetboil by far in the wind. I haven't had the BSR out in the same conditions but I doubt it's going to perform as well. When I was using the modified Windmaster and a Jetboil pot in the wind I also used a piece of titanium foil tucked under the bottom edge of the neoprene sleeve to act as an additional wind block. It wrapped about half way around the pot and an inch or so below the bottom of the heat exchanger. That worked really well, it weighs nothing and stores easily. I'll use it on the Inferno pot with the BRS when I get the Neoprene sleeve modified for it.

I've built a few stove systems so figured I'd share for anybody that might be looking for some ideas. For my needs this setup has been the best so far. Not trying to claim its the lightest possible setup but it is light and quite small in size when packed up. Typically I boil my needed water to re-hydrate my food and then boil a second pot for coffee or hot cocoa. Boil time is usually under 2 minutes.

Burner (Snowpeak Litemax)- 1.95 oz
Pot (Toaks 550) - 1.85 oz
Windshield (cut up fuel canister) - 1.62 oz
Silicone lid - 1.2 oz
Kozy (from GSI minimilast) - .45 oz

7.07 oz total less fuel and a mini bic

Love the idea of using the cozy to hold a Ti windshield. Also, love that the canister upcycle into a windshield. Brilliant hacks!

OK... finally took the knife to the 4 plex windmaster stand and trimmed it to fit inside my Jetboil flash mug. Not the neatest of hack jobs, but it now rests inside the fins without the need to hack the HX pot. Additionally, I set it up with an Optimus clip on windshield for laughs.

Did a couple of initial boil tests, 2 cups per boil. Ambient temp 7 deg C, water straight out of garden tap. didn't measure what temp it was. Light, gentle breeze.

Here are my observations

1) I can't run the Windmaster on full gas. At most, 2.25 turns from full close. You can see the flame jets coming out the side of the fins and licking the cozy.. smell it too..lol

2) Boil time is around 2.5 minutes

3) Average fuel used was 6g

All up, I didn't think it was too bad, considering ambient conditions.
Please excuse the hack job on the stove stand. I'm impatient, and horribly hopeless with tools and pliers.

Have attached some pictures for you folks for reference.

Quick Update:

By moving the cozy out of the way and setting the stove on Max, with flames jetting out the sides of the HX.

I got 2 cups to a boil in 1:30 avg in 7 deg ambient temp using 6 g of fuel per boil

Looks like I'm going to need to source a zip cozy for this.
