Two eyes or One?

Nice post squeekieslayer, totally agree. I shoot both eyes the majority of the time. I do have to squint my left (non-dom) eye for a brief second once in a while to get rid of seeing two targets. Sometimes I leave it squinted- it all depends on getting the best and clearest sight picture. I talked to my ophthalmologist about it and she went into a long rant about dominance and neural connections and that no two people have the same "connections". Bottom line, if it works for you then keep doing it.

I've always shot with both eyes and still do, but I'm now having an issue caused by my contact lens prescription. My left, normally non-dominant eye has a weaker correction so I can read without reading glasses (I'm 54) and my right is fully corrected to distance. I use a clarifier to see the pins. My brain has adapted to use my left eye up close. When I shoot a struggle occurs and I get a blended view which really puts a wrinkle in my focus and concentration. I can close my left eye to get refocused, but it's a confidence killer. Not sure what the long term solution is....maybe just give in to reading glasses and admit I'm over 50.

First things first.... If you are using a CLARIfier to see the pins... get rid of it. You need a VERIfier to see pins up close. Clarifiers are used to clear the distance image of the target when used in conjunction with a scope lens.

Monovision (the type of contact lens system you are using) will make shooting with both eyes open MUCH MUCH easier. That said, if shooting with your dominant eye, you have no help for the pins.... as you are noticing.

A few ways to try and help.
1) Shoot with the smallest peep that allows you to center the housing when aiming.. but no more than that. I know that this is taboo in a worl of giant "hunting" peeps made out of different colored or glow in the dark materials. DO yourself a favor, get a specialty archery housing and a few varied sized peeps and select the SMALLEST PEEP THAT YOU CAN STILL BE COMFORTABLE WITH. I shoot a 3/64 peep on my target bow and can still see plenty of light through it till well after legal shooting hours. I feel that this is a stupid trend in marketing big flashy peeps to hunters. You will be suprised at how well it works.
2) use a bigger/brighter pin. You should NOT be looking at the pin at all when shooting, so it should be blurry anyway when staring a hole in the target. That said, a brighter pin would help.
3) Change to a blue pin. This typically requires a good light, but it will be a sharper point of aim for you with near vision issues. I suggest the LP system. Make sure it is legal in your state.
4) Shoot a 1 pin sight. Allows a more natural aim... pin in the center of housing. Then you are just puting circles inside of circles... seems to help a lot, especially if your fast bow causes your pins to be so close that they blur together.
5) get a VERIFIER not clarifier. That will help with the pins, but a word of warning, do NOT just get the strongest one. Get the smallest and weakest one possible as to avoid blurring out the target.

My first bow came with a small peep and I was shooting bb's out of it almost immediately. Then come dusk of opening day and I've got an elk herd at 50 to 60 yards. Look thru the peep nothing. Look without using the peep and there they are. There just wasn't enough light coming thru that tiny peep to my eye for me to see my target in low light conditions. Maybe that's the real benefit of using both eyes???

I went to the bow shop and bought the biggest peep they had!

Yes, thanks squeeklieslayer... I have a Verifier...thanks for reminding me. It is the weakest one they make and I'm using 029 pins in alternating green and yellow...found the red to be tough in even medium light.

I started shooting two eyes just last year, and it helps alot. Much better sight/target picture. Only time I think it helps to shoot with one eye is when it is really bright.

I just tried to use one eye (something I have not done in a while) and it was amazing how much clearer the entire site picture was.
