Go with TSS with tight choke and longer distance for him. It's best shot on wide range distance

Rockandsage is correct. TSS doesn’t need to be choked down like lead, I shoot factory full. And it’s definitely worth every penny.

well, they ended up buying him a 410 yesterday, red dot, and 2 boxes of tss so he should be good to go, now just the wait for turkey season.

Hmmm. No one and only right answer her. Depends on the young shooters ability, but I very may well think about Improved Cylinder with TSS if it were my kid. Improved Cyl is pretty darn tight with TSS, and it'll still reach to 50 yards, with a little more forgiving pattern. You could go to Modified if the youngster has a steady hand. I pattern tested around 100 loads/choke TSS combos, but most of my testing was with larger size shot for ducks/geese/pheasant. That said, my patterns didn't get any tighter when I exceeded full choke. Attached are a couple patterns I shot with 1oz #9s, Modified choke constriction...at 40 yards and 50 yards. Note: another gun of mine required Improved Modified choke to equal this pattern density.

I have shot a pile of pattern checks with several different shotguns and none of them have shot worth a crap with a more open choke. Folks always say to try your factory full or modified choke first, but I have found that to be a waste of components.

I get the best patterns(tightest patterns) from the tighter chokes.

In my particular case, I wasn't looking for the absolute tightest possible pattern, as I was looking for long range duck, goose and pheasant loads. But out of this particular gun/barrel, I did in fact try improved modified and then full chokes, but the patterns didn't get any tighter than this (96% density at 40 yards). But everybody's mileage will vary on this I'm sure!
