Truck upgrades

Hey there, currently rocking a 2008 ford ranger 4wd for all my outdoor adventures. Kind of like my little outdoors golf cart haha. Pretty stock, just wanted to hear from you guys what are the best updgrades you have made to your hunting rigs that improve their abilities in the field? I’m not worried about my rig but I’m not totally confident in it either. Making an out of state trip this year and am willing to put some money into it.
 
Top of the line, quality tires + compressor and deflation tools for adjusting your air pressure for rough roads is really all you need besides the basic stuff to deal with getting unstuck, handle common in field repairs (serpentine belt, blown coolant lines, tire punctures, dead batteries etc). Otherwise, stay on top of and be super proactive about your maintenance by not neglecting diff, transmission, power steering, brake and coolant fluids.
 
I wouldnt get too carried away with it. Toss on some tires that arent made for a car. Valve core tool and an air gauge are cheap, plug kit has saved my ass a few times. Lil air compressor. Thats about all I'd do


That old of a truck, if its been neglected and you start doing a bunch of maintenance on it. Its liable to turn into a needy bitch...

True that, I will say it’s been kept pretty well all things considered.
 
Tires are the best "upgrade" for any car. It's the only part that touches the road/dirt. Buy 5 of them to put a good full size tire on your spare too. Keep up on maintenance. Battery jumper, air compressor, etc.

I wanted some aggressive off road bumpers but the price is wild. I told myself if I ever go out there and mess up my stock bumpers because I didn't have enough approach angle or departure angle, I'll buy them. Its been 3 years and I still haven't got hung up on anything. I did get swiped on the front bumper in a target parking lot and no one left any info, that was my real chance to get a new bumper.
 
Chains and a come-a-long winch are great. If you do a lift or increase tire size keep it minimal.

The amount of overloaded trucks that have 2,000lbs of extra junk is wild and only hurts reliability/capability.
 
Arm arms and better front shocks, and rear shocks.

After that air compressor, AGM battery, tools, probably deck system, a few ditch lights and then recovery gear.

If I had more money I’d add pop up camper shell,
 
Get an F150. I had one of those older Rangers. Horrible. Same gas mileage, puny, no power, and had a larger tuning radius than any F150 I’ve had since. Just my real life experience/opinion.

If you're doing a big out-of-state hunt in an older truck like that, doing all the basic maintenance (new oil, filter, etc) and the more longer-interval maintenance is worth considering. If you have the time/tools/skills, replacing the belt and hoses long before the trip isn't a bad idea. Depending on how long it's been, and especially if you'll be loaded down with gear, changing the diff and transmission fluids might also be a good idea. If you'll be in the cold at all, be sure your battery is on the newer side, and if there's any issues with the battery cables at all, fix that too.

The point @Steve300xcw made about more things turning up that will need maintenance/replacing is really something to pay attention to - you'll find more than you expect, and it'll take 2x the money and 3x the time, but every bit of that will add to the peace of mind with the hunt. Just make sure it's all done a couple of months before the trip, as you want it to have some shake-down miles on it to make sure everything's settled in and good to go.

As to additional things to keep in the truck, get a battery jumper-pack, a high-lift jack, keep some lengths of 2x4s and/or strips of plywood to stick under the tires as traction boards, and make sure you have 2 sets of keys for the vehicle.

You missed my point. I swear some rigs/bikes have feelings. They get used to being neglected and all is well. Toss a few bucks at them though and they start craving the attention and act out when it doesnt happen. My last ktm 300 would get prissy if you even used soap when you washed it:ROFLMAO: One should think long and hard before poking that bear...

Highlift isnt worth much unless you have bumpers to lift off of. Nice to walk a rig sideways onto a road though.. I like a factory screw jack if dumb shit is going to happen as its on a leash. Otherwise the bottle jacks outta 4wd sprinter vans can be had for $80ish IIRC, and are badass IMO

I like 2x6's or 12's as they burn a hell of a lot better than plywood if one is in a pinch.

I'd just about bet money that a 90's era CCLB ford will out turn my '14 f150...
