Truck Campers

Bear in mind one thing. The more weight, height, width and length you carry, the smaller your traveling world becomes. With a traditional tent or truck tent you can access places those with "portable cabins" will never reach. For me, getting into places that are remote and devoid of other bipeds is the goal. If you're willing to sacrifice that and pay a mountain of money to camp in a lock box then fine. Enjoy yourself. I cannot justify the long term costs (especially the fuel) or restrictions during camping/hunting season. My 10X14 Kodiak Canvas goes up in 15 minutes solo and hunting out of a tent just feels right to me. But now that I think about it...I agree, everyone should get a big lumbering camper & trailer. That would be perfect. LOL

Pretty sure the OP already has a tent. As do most people with campers. Different setups for different trips. That way everything is covered.

I was in the same boat, I lived out of tents for a period in my life and always used one even camped by a vehicle. We found pretty quick that is was quite difficult to heat up a bottle with a jetboil once the first kid came along. now we have two kids and "upgrading" to an old four wheel camper was one of the best moves we made. I'm on my second one now (1993 grandby) and have customized and fixed it up to be a great little unit. You can't expect it to stay toasty warm all night unless you are hooked up to power but we just use our warm sleeping bags from tent camping and we're good to go. Used FWCs are hard to come by but they do exist. If buying new I'd take a hard look a ATC campers. New FWCs are comically expensive for what they are... I guess a lot of hunting stuff is too tho haha

Yup absolutely, already have backpacking gear and car camping setup. I’m mainly looking for a quick grab and go option, hitch up and head out without going in garage and looking for all the camping boxes and stoves etc. I usually backpack for my hunts, so this is more of a easy overnight getaway/hunt when time is limited and I don’t wanna waste time building a camp or breaking one down for a 24-48 hour trip. Plus being able to pull off on the side of a small pull out on a FS or BLM road and not having to set anything up is also a plus. Wake up, make breakfast, go hunt, drive home.

I have had 3 cabovers through the years and am on the prowl for a good used one again myself. They are quite handy and allow you to trailer other items. I still backpack plenty and camp in a tent, but for all the reasons listed so far, they are great. Especially if you want to be mobile or take the wife/kids and have more amenities available.

I have an Allterrain shell model camper and I absolutely love it for weekend trips where I hunting from the road. It doesn't replace to mobility of a tent, but it's almost priceless for my WT Deer hunting needs.

Once you have "a place for everything" you can setup and take down in less than 10 minutes. Being able to stand and take a few steps is priceless in itself.

A camper is a great addition for any hunter. I am lucky enough to have a company truck I drive full time for both work and personal use. My own truck has a bigfoot camper on it year around, ready to camp. Park my company truck friday after work, jump in my camper truck and I am off! As much as I enjoy my camper, it gets more use just camping then it does for hunting. As far as hunting my backpack tent, cabelas guide tent and wall tent still get the most use. Its hard to get my truck and camper to many off road places as my bigfoot camper is a large heavy unit. Campers are also not well suited for 2 guys, let alone more. I use mine more for solo hunting where I can park at my hunting spot or tow a trailer with my atv or utv. A camper is a must have item for me.

I have a hybrid shell/tent made by Adventure Trailers in Prescott, AZ. When it has the same in bed space as a shell. When its deployed I have 7' of standing room in the bed. The entire thing is just under 400 lbs.

Got any pics showing the inside of that thing? Is it tight in there?

My bed is a 5'7" so that is your standing area and with the top deployed you have over 7' of headroom. The sleeping area is cantilevered out behind the truck. There is a 3' deep area about chest height above the cab that makes a great shelf. I just sold the Habitat as it was too hard for me to close it up with my bum shoulders and the sleeping area was too narrow for 2 people. I have a ARE shell on order and will be putting a GoFast Campers ultra light Roof top tent on it.
