Looking for a solid tripod that I can use with the Razor 27-60x85. Will also use for Bino's. Will have to carry the thing. I want a pan head, not a ball head for glassing. At this point, in looking around, I am considering one of:
  1. Vortex Pro GT : I like the VIP warranty, the fact that is won't break the bank, and it seems like their stuff is "good enough" for a guy like me. I don't like the length and weight.
  2. Sirui T-024SK with VA-5 Head: Weight and height. Heard great smooth head. Don't like: No idea about the warranty, quick release heads are $$$$
  3. A SLIK Carbon (634?) with some head (VA-5?): Just heard a lot of folks liking these. Don't like: Going to be a bit $$$ too.
I figure I'll use it 6-10x/year. Mostly in single day or maybe 4 day pack-in situations.

I'd really appreciate input on this before I pull the trigger.

Thanks,

Phil

The BEST bet would be the Manfrotto Befree Live US. It folds up small to fit in a backpack and comes with a Fluid pan head.
The model is MVKBFRT-LiveUS. This is the aluminum version, it's also made in carbon fiber as well
The aluminum is normally $239.99 but as a member here would be $199.99. Much better built then any of the 3 you mentioned. The Carbon Fiber version, normally $349.99, would be $299.99

What type of warranty is the Manfrotto come with? I am not super familiar with their stuff.

Thx, Phil

I'm currently using the be free pan head while nice the controls aren't as the user friendly as the va5 head. If they used the same mounting plate I'd change over.

Stay away from the pro GT. It’s not even in the good enough category really. My brother has one and yes they have a warranty but it’s just not very steady, the locks are pretty flimsy and the legs on his tend to creep.

I have the vortex summit and it’s a little light with a bigger optic at full leg extension. Heads and tails above the pro GT for both size and weight. I use an outdoorsman’s head (previously a vanguard pH-111v and Benro S2). The benro head handles a heavier scope famously for a budget set up FYI. I’m thinking about going back to one from my outdoorsman’s honestly.

For legs - slik sprint pro or 624 if you’re not planning to use it standing.

Slik 634 for standing height with binos or straight spotter (I’m 6’ tall and this is what I run). If you’re a bit shorter, the manfroto or the promaster xc525 (I prefer carbon for the vibration dampening) they have aluminum as a budget minded option.

Call Doug or Joel at cameraland ny. I’ve yet to be able to purchase from them (due to being in Canada and some Swarovski restrictions) but they’re a great source of knowledge and will point you in the best direction.

So you are using a Summit SS? That was an option too, but thought it was a OK for Bino's but not the Spotter. Also, I am 5'9". Seems like the $ difference between the Summit and the others is huge. I hate that I can't "feel" these all near each other. Oh well, I'll figure it out.

If you plan to use your spotter while sitting down the SS should be ok. Not perfect but it gets the job done for me outside of high winds.

Full disclosure I’m a weight wienie when it comes to my backpack set up. Moreso I like compact and small stuff. I bought the SS and used it a lot with the upgraded head for my previous light weight optics set up. (Swarovski cl 10x30 binos and leupold 15-30x40 spotter) it worked great with that little spotter but I’ve since sold it and moved on to a Swarovski stx with a 65mm and a 95mm lens.

The stock head won’t handle the weight of either of those spotters on the summit ss or ssp very well. The legs are decent on the 65 without using the center column up to the 3rd extension. So a sitting height for me. If I’m using the 95 it’s only stable when fully compressed as a table top tripod.

Myself and my partners tried a few other models out and I’ve ended up with a slik 634 carbon.

Most of that choice cane from trial and error and based on my individual needs. The areas I hunt elk and moose have grown in considerably so I need to be able to stand so that I can see over the growth in 75% of my glassing points. Aside from that it handles the weight of my optics much better. Of course still really shaky if I use the Center column but that’s almost any tripod and especially anything I’d consider humping around in my backpack.

My glassing style is to use my binos most of the time then verify with the spotter if I’m going for a stalk.

If you’re looking solely for spotter use and have an angled eyepiece and plan on sitting, you can probably get away with the summit and be happy. Maybe even standing with binos if it’s not too windy. I’d suggest no matter what if you get the summit consider changing out the head. That was its biggest downfall for me.

I guess this is a really really long way to say, there’s a lot of suitable options out there and it can get really overwhelming. If anything though I would stay away from the pro GT. Secondly carbon tripods tend to hold a better value for resale on here if you’re unhappy with what you get and want to recoup some funds for another.

Lastly - I haven’t tried it personally but I’ve heard decent things about the amazon basics carbon fiber tripods as a low budget option.

Slik pro 634cf tripod and vanguard ph-111v head

Here’s a great option at a really good price. I’ve run this exact set up in the past. With a big spotter the vanguard head might shift your view off center when locking the pan at high zoom. That was the reason I switched out but I was over 100x with the 95mm lens and extender puck. Up to about 50x it was money.

I mostly sit when I glass, and was able to snag a "lightly used" SS off the forum, so will give it a shot. Thanks for the info.
