Tripod Advice

Have you received it yet? If so, any initial reviews?

I got it a few days ago and have been messing around with it a lot. However, I have yet to get it out in the field. As of now, I am very happy with it. I've put the camera on it for a few pictures and my vanguard 10x42 binos (with vanguard bino adapter). It is very light weight and compact. Fits in the vertical pocket of my KUIU 1850. The quick release that came with it works but is a pain to switch and tighten. I will be buying a few of the promaster plates that S & S Archery recommend.

Did you get the 224, or 225 tripod? I've seen both on camofire. Leaning toward the 225. Seen it for $189 with the 111 panhead.

Vortex is coming out with a New Summit SS with the pan head come March. This should be a very sweet lightweight (2lb with pan-head) Tripod. I use the Summit SS at present with ballhead & it does very well up to 3lb, the New Model will support & handle the largest 85 & 80 Spotters & will run aprox 129.00 & raise to 54-1/2" & fold to 13". That's very tough to beat as a total package!

I would pass on the HighCountry, I even say that as a Dealer, the Summit is a better unit.

Good to know, thanks for the heads up. When will the new tripod be out?

I got the 244 with 111 pan head. The difference between the 224 and 225 is the maximum height, the 224 being taller (Yes, the 225 is smaller when folded). In order to determine which one I would need I broke out the measuring tape and set them at both heights. What lead me to height of the 224 was the idea it would be better for camera work and I wouldn't have to hunch over as much to use an angled spotting scope while standing.

I missed the deal on camofire so I just called and got the 224 and 111 at the deal price ($165) no problems ask.

Let us know if you go with one of the vanguards or the new vortex!

My bad, somehow missed where you said March.

I'm in no hurry to get one. I want to get my hands on them first, hopefully. When you get more time in with your vanguard, I'd love to hear more o your thoughts.

I agree 100%. Without a fluid pan head on it the Summit won't be teh best option for scanning. That said I rarely scan with my spotter and mainly use my spotter for blob enhancement so the Summitt SS with an UPGRADED ballhead works for me. The ones that come standard on the Summitt SS are not up to par IMO.
Luke what did you upgrade to?

I ended up going with the Vanguard alta + tripod with the Ph111v pan head. Got a great deal off of camofire.

Thanks again for all the comments!

How do you like it? I just pulled the trigger on the VANGUARD ALTA+ 224CT CARBON TRIPOD W/ PH111V PAN HEAD! Can't wait to give it a go!

I almost did the same, but am going to hold out for the 225. Seems like good bang for the buck with the camofire price.

So far, so good. It's light enough that there's no reason not to take it and steady enough to use in wind. I've been using it with 10x42s and I don't see how I ever lived without a tripod. The pan head is surprising smooth but the handle has some minor play in it. I would highly recommend it. Can't beat the camo fire price!
