New to the trimming world, though not new to reloading

300 win mag

My process...

Shoot
deprime
tumble
wire brush primer pocket
clean
lube
FL size
Trim to 2.610 give or take .002 (new step)
chamfer and deburr
load

Why am I getting a slight groove on the inside of the neck? It has to be the centering pin in front of the cutter, and there has to be a little side press from the two sides of the trimmer not lining up perfectly. Though, the left side that holds the case has wiggle room to move when the alignment pin goes into the case and lines it all up to cut flush. Is this groove somewhat normal for some folks? I have fine grit sanded the centering pin and it is perfectly smooth to the touch and cotton.

Following. I have never seen this before and really curious. If I'm understanding correctly, the ring forms after trimming, but not after sizing ?

Correct. Sizing and cleaning are completed, no ring. Trimming, ring appears. It has to be the centering pin thing that sits in front of the cutters on the trimmer, though it feels super smooth with no burrs or bumps or anything.

Is the neck real tight over the pilot?

Doesn’t feel like it. I don’t need or use much pressure at all once it lines up with the case, just slips right over and the cutter meets the brass of the neck. The handle then spins easily slowly trimming and then once it has trimmed to length and bottomed out, it spins super nice and easily with no real resistance

I would try trimming then sizing. Maybe the trimmer pilot is larger than your sizing die?

Sure looks like it's the pilot leaving the mark. I'd also trim first then size and or measure the sized case mouth and the pilot to see where your at

Do you notice much play or runout in the case as you are turning it?

Maybe try pull the pilot off, chuck it in you drill with 500 grit emery cloth and lightly polish.

Gosh, im thinking there may be some debris or burrs on the pilot. I see a little bit of run-out in the case but there has to be something abrasive rubbing on the inside of the neck

I have some 2k grit sand paper and 0000wool that I will use on the pilot in a drill tomorrow and see what happens.

For the cases that have the grove, would you load them? The ring/grove is not deep at all, you can feel it with a pick but not a screw drive or Allen key when run over it.

I think they will be fine. The only thing I would think that would be affected would be more variation in muzzle velocities.

Get a Wilson trimmer. No pilots.

Neck size only with a Lee collet neck sizing die.

The pilot is probably smoothing the brass as it’s being turned in there. I wouldn’t be concerned with it. One thing I would change using that style of trimmer is trimming more often.

You can probably buy it cheaper, but it works just fine. I use one and like it better than the Lyman universal I had, which is similar to the rcbs you have.

At that price point, get a Giraud tri way. Does all three steps in one. Instead of 3 like that Frankford.
