I tried it today with both--Base map shows your direction of travel with an arrow while the map stays with north pointing up.

OnX will rotate the map in the direction your traveling if you tap icon.

I think it just comes down to preference and what your use to seeing while navigating.

Having a problem recently with basemap, where when I open it it opens to a spot I hunted in Alaska, rather then my current location... . Driving me crazy to figure it out.

You should send basemap an email no doubt they'll know what setting needs changed.

So you have to push the icon everytime to change it to your location?

that’s what I understand too. Even on X, if I don’t have great service, I often have to hit that button to get it to show me where I’m at. Sometimes it’s only off a few hundred yards, other times it’s showing were 100 a week ago.

The thing I dont like about Basemap is that you have to download a different offline map for each, ortho, topo, and hybrid etc. Where on OnX you download 1 offline area and you get all three of those features. Multiple times this past season I went to open a map to find out it was just the satellite imagery map that I downloaded. Maybe just operator error?

I have both, there are certain things I like better on each. Easy of use goes to onX, best value is BaseMap much more affordable then onx, BaseMap has way more options for in depth scouting

I had this same issue and thought maybe it was just something I was doing wrong. Maybe it’s something we’re both doing wrong but I have the same issue. I used BaseMap for a Wyoming elk hunt, downloaded all my maps ahead of time, both high res with several layer including topo and one larger area size topo (this saved me) only to find out when I got on the mountain with no service the topo layer was gone from the high res download. Luckily since I had the topo map saved I could just switch back and forth but it was pretty annoying. Especially when my hunting buddy could open OnX and have it all on one screen. Other than that little issue that I’m hoping is just user error, I really like BaseMap because I use it for more than just western hunting. Did you ever find an answer to this? Is it just user error on our part or is it really a limitation?

I emailed Basemaps about just updating already cached maps, they said they don’t have that capability yet, so the the solution was to delete all your maps and re-download with the correct layer. I have both Basemaps and OnX so after that I just switched back to OnX. Not sure yet if I will renew my Basemaps subscription yet. Keep me posted if you find a solution.

Thank you for the comment. As of right now we do not have a solution. However, we are currently working to improve our offline mapping solutions and you should see an update coming soon.

We do have an update coming in the very near future that will greatly improve our offline mapping solutions.

I want to make sure I have this right. Can I download an offline map that has a topo layer over the top of the high res image now? The last time I tried was before my WY elk trip back in October. I’m not talking about updating an already downloaded map. I’m talking about creating a new offline map. Is this possible now?

I know this thread is older but I used on X for a few years. It took some getting used to in order to operate Basemap but it does have alot more layers and options. Also if you have any questions email Basemap. My buddies wife is the one that answers all the emails. She's a hardcore outdoors lady that uses it practically daily along with her husband. She's very helpful.

Tbh, smaller file sizes and multiple topo layers in 1 download is all it would take to make Basemap crush OnX. I think the only layer I really miss was the roadless layer, but you can just look at maps and ascertain that.
Thank you for the comment. Our offline mapping feature is something that we are working diligently to improve so that users have a better experience.

I landed on basemap to try this year because of the price for multi state. As a whitetail guy I just wish they had a way point marker for rubs and scrapes. I'm sure by next year I'm not going to remember if the stacked rock icon was a rub or a scrape.

Yeah they definitely lack some more common waypoint markers. I think you can enter details on the waypoint.

Thank you for the comment. We are currently working on updating and increasing the number of icons we have for markers. Please watch for an update to come in the next few months.
