Got my cascade mountains off eBay and used the 20% off code posted here the other day. Our Costco did not have them. Came in today and seem pretty dang nice.
I became a believer in the mid 1990s when I started backpacking. Biggest advantage to dedicated poles over ski poles is going to be the ability to adjust length both for fit but also for shifting length going uphill (shorter) and downhill (longer). The are also some other design differences in the purpose built poles like grip design and angle, shock absorbtion, etc that make them better imo. However, a ski pole or walking stick is better than nothing.
I can’t say I always use them but for heavy loads they are the bomb.
