Trekking poles

Going on my first elk hunt and I was reading the thread below and seen trekking poles are a valuable piece of equipment. The costco ones have good reviews. My question is what tip do you use most often? Thanks

I have REI branded carbon fiber poles. Not inexpensive, but have served me well for the last 4 years.

I’m curious about this as well. When I got mine, I thought those rubber tips were for old mall walkers or something and threw them away. Since then I have read about folks using them to stay quiet on rocks, but I’ve never used them when trying to get in close to an animal.

I pull the rubber tips off unless I plan to pack the poles a lot with the tip down in the side pocket. The metal tip grabs rocks really well. If I know I’m close to elk I’m for sure not using my trekking poles

Depending on where you are and how your hunting, these may not be necessary.
Personally I do hunt from a campsite in a heavily wooded area.
Any time I need one I grab a stick and can toss when I'm done.
If the day ever comes when I'll be hauling meat I'll get two sturdy ones.
If you're bivy hunting or going feel in Backcountry, especially in more of a juniper or desert setting, Costco ones are great for the price

I bought some off eBay and they seem nice. They're called stage and are aluminum, about $18. I only use them when I'm out west once a year or so. They're great when packing out heavy loads. I usually take the rubber tips off and leave the caps that are about 2" from the end on.

i picked up some leki corklite ones off ebay. They are pretty nice.

We got some decent Komperdell poles on a good deal from Sierra Trading Post. Usually roll with the carbide tip. Very few times I recall wishing I had the snow baskets. Rubber tips are for asphalt IMO. I don't use them while I'm actively hunting - just packing. Most areas I hunt are fairly thick.

Just ordered the S&S Archery poles. They are on sale for $99 and get 10% off with "Rokslide". Hope they are worth the $ as I have never had trekking poles. From what I read they are good ones. Buy once cry once I guess.

New to elk hunting, but I'd go with the S&S poles. I have some aluminum ones from Amazon, but on my scouting trip at least one was usually in the pack so I started looking at some new ones to cut weight and the S&S seem to be the best weight for the buck. I plan to upgrade to them eventually

Very few times I recall wishing I had the snow baskets.

I’ve never actually needed them for snow, but I leave mine on all the time to keep my poles from sinking in mud.

I use the Costco poles. I leave the rubber on. I shao use one pole for creeping through timber, going over logs, walking through noisy stuff etc. Seems to soften the step a bitand let me get in to real close range.

I'm a Pacer Poles convert. My knees and back are less stressed, as has been said, particularly on ups and downs.

I've had good luck with the Locus Gear CP3 poles for the past 3 seasons and they are lighter than anything else out there at 10.5 oz for the pair.

I use the rubber tips. I would never use them trying to get close to game only for long hauls, steep up and down or heavy pack outs.

Does anyone have any experience with the Black Diamond Trail Pole Pro Poles? I have heard that the brand is good quality, but not sure about this specific pole. They run right at $130.00.

I have a few different black diamond poles. They were purchased for skiing but carried them hunting last year for the first time. Wont go without them again. I only used them for packing out meat but they were well worth the weight of carrying them around. Every set of black diamond poles I have are bomber. The flicklocks are stout and never had a problem with sections moving. I have about 5-7 years on most my BD poles and they take a beating but still work just fine.

I have the Carbon ones . Love them !!!! I never used poles till last season . Now I never hunt out west without them . Amazon has a good selection . Make sure you read the bad reviews first .

To the OP's original question, I prefer the rounded rubber tips. There's also one that kinda looks like a boot shape which is OK too but a little heavier. I have the Costco poles and also a pair of Montem poles which I prefer as they have a little more flex and have metal flip levers to adjust quickly. On my Montems, one of the pointed metal tips worte thru the rubber after using them maybe 2-3 times. Just my observation but all poles tip attachments seem rather poor in design as I've had several come off. Wish they made them with a better connection.
