Posting here since since rokslide is a little more utilitarian about fishing gear than most fly fishing forums.

My 5 wt broke recently but I still have a decent reel and the line is pretty fresh. I already have nice 4wt and 6wt setups (mid range rods, USA machined reels) so I don’t want to put too much $$ into a 5wt, but a 6+ piece rod would be useful to throw in the pack or the trunk on a trip with a little side fishing or into my carryon on a work trip (don’t want to lug around a ~30” rod tube).

Orvis Clearwater and Redington trailblazer is $250-300, more $ than ideal but doable. Hardy and Echo are better but much more expensive. Has anyone on here tried the recent cabelas/bass pro ones or the maxcatch on Amazon? I know casting won’t be like a higher end rod but I’m looking for something usable that won’t break too easy

I bought a Maxcatch 8 weight for a back up rod and it's better than it should be for the $90 cost. An 8 piece travel rod seems crazy though.

I got a TFO 5 wt.

Got it on sale for maybe $120 on amazon a few years ago. 4 piece. It throws anything.

Funny thing is a recently took a spill on a large slopped boulder and broke my 3 wt on a tree, now I’m waiting for a sale for a decent 3 wt rod haha

I have the Echo Trip 8 piece. yeah, it costs more but I feel like any travel rod isn't going to be incredible at casting, so I wanted something super compact (that fits in a carry-on bag) vs. a 4 or 6 piece that's still pretty long / sticks out of a backpack. It casts just fine, I've caught lots of fish on it. Is it as good as my normal rods? no. does it catch fish and enable me to bring a fly rod anywhere? yep.

another option is the Reyr Rod. I have that too. It's almost like a hybrid between a tenkara and a normal rod. It won't shoot line that well, but the advantage is that you can leave it all rigged up when it's collapsed. It's fun to keep around...I fished with that exclusively for a year when travelling and caught lots of dinners.

You could get an eagle claw for like 40 bucks but who knows how it casts a line. I had one of their travel spin rods but the action of an ultralight spin rod dosent matter much (since spin fishing is stupid). The fly rod version might be pretty soft.

You could check eBay for one of those older orvis 7 piece rods. My dad has one and even though it’s 25 years old it’s still pretty OK.

I've got an old TFO 5 weight, I believe it is 6 piece, but I can't remember.

Compared to my other (admittedly cheaper) 5 weight 2 piece rods, the TFO is just, well, more stiff. It fishes and in the right circumstance is handy, but it isn't as enjoyable as I had hoped.

I'm not sure how you get away from the more sections the more stiff it will be until you go up in quality.

Incidentally, while I enjoy fly fishing, these days a small ultralight spinning rig is my go to. I know, sacrilege! LOL.

But every year I look forward to a day or two of standing in the creek the evening of a hot day, drifting grasshoppers on a single hook with a chunk of split shot. To this day, it's like I'm a kid again, goin' fishin'!

If you find a multipiece 5 weight that handles like a 2 piece for a reasonable price, please let us know!

All of those are off the shelf Asian blanks, go with whichever you can put hands on and be happy with.
Any cheaper and you may as well buy an eagle claw.

They will all work
