Trash in the Backcountry

I started shed hunting this year and put a lot of miles in my boots. I’ve been disappointed to find tons of trash deep in mountains and have been picking it up as I go and putting it in my pack. It is a bit of a hassle to take my pack fully off as I have a camera attached I bring with me and when I have sheds strapped to it I have to take them off and put them back on every time I come across a can, balloon, etc. to hike out.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for hip belt attachments that have a larger carrying capacity that I could stow maybe 2-3 cans, plastic, balloons, etc. so I am not having to take my pack off and reassemble every time I pick up a piece of trash. I run a Stone Glacier pack and have thought about getting the larger accessory belt pouch, but feel it still wouldn’t be big enough to carry lots of trash. Just looking for something big enough to carry a chunk of trash so when I come across the next shed to strap to the pack, I can empty out the trash pouch as well into my lid or something then refill the belt pouch and not have to take my pack off as frequently.

Thanks!

Perhaps make something. Like a needle of some sort and a paracord? Puncture the garbage and string it.

Sad you find that you find that much garbage. I always find some, but it is tolerable since it could be inadvertent.

Thank you for doing the right thing, I am right beside you.

that sucks you are finding that much trash in the woods. I used to bass fish a lot and whenever I noticed some trash floating by I would try and pick it up to give me a little luck hopefully. I try and pick it up in the woods as well but I don't really notice that much.

The aforementioned dump pouch might be the way to go. Some of them fold up pretty small and you might be able to get two and stick them on your belt.

Good on you for picking that stuff up although it’s a shame that you have to.

I carry something out every trip, unfortunately if I tried to grab everything I would never get to hunt or fish!

It is pretty bad these days!

Thank you for picking up the trash you are doing a great service and hopefully you are rewarded with sheds in return.
I’d like to think my success this year was some karma from loading up on trash. Funny enough I was running kennetrek gaitors and they are pretty loose, I was able to stuff cans smashed down into my gaitor to walk around with. Switched to SG gaitors and they are too tight to stuff trash. This has created the dilemma too hah.

I did about 65 miles over 5 trips and found more cans, balloons, wrappers, etc than I thought I would. I guess the more time you spend out there the more trash you come across.

I think this is going to be the way to go after a quick google, I like the idea of an elastic closing top too, could be the move. It is a shame. I had a couple friends bring me along shed hunting and they joked about how many Mylar balloons they come across, I thought it was a joke. I think I’m up to 7 already not counting the endless cans, plastic wrappers, etc. too.

Thanks for cleaning up as you go, I try and do the same. Funny enough I've thought this should be a business idea. A dump pouch that has compression straps of some kind, and is water proof-ish. That way you can drop stuff in there easily, then compress it down after you close it up. That way its not leaking on you or swinging around. Same way a garbage truck works.

Also, I loathe mylar balloons.

In my country I find most l litterbugs drink Bud lite. They carry it full in 2-3 miles but don't have the strength to pack the empties out.
I can’t imagine pounding back the brews that deep in some of the areas I was shed hunting this year, to each their own. I also am disheartened to see so many really old cans. I’m not scientist on how quickly can logos fade, but to me looks like the cans have been out there longer than some of the old sheds I found. No way people had not walked past them just like myself and chose to not pick them up.

Let’s go into business? Lol I was thinking about it too as a side idea if I knew how to sew. Could try to get backpackers on board too because I imagine they are offenders too …

I just try to pack out 1 piece of trash. It goes in my drink holder on the side of my pack. That way I am still doing the right thing but not burdening myself.

Every bit helps! I will say the first shed I found was after 7 miles of hiking and I had picked up a piece of trash then found the shed a quarter mile later. So maybe my own head thinks if I don’t pick up trash I won’t find sheds!

Luckily there is virtually no garbage in our mountains.
