Traditional rifle?

I would personally find a nice Savage 99. I have a "newer" model 1960's but am always looking around trying to find a earlier model just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

If you could find an 1895 Winchester in 30 06, you could hunt anything and shoot as far as you want. There are some in 303 too. I have one in 3040 Krag that was made in 1908. Not a tube magazine, like the Savage 99, so any type of bullet works just fine.

I love a good Lever, have a 1894 JM Marlin .44 mag, a Henry Big Boy 44 mag, and a Henry Lever .22 mag.
Wanting a Marlin in .45 Colt.

Pre 64' m94's have moved out the realm of reasonabley priced meat getters for me. Don't get me wrong, theyr'e great guns and I've packed a couple of my dad 25-35's around before, just the ones I see on racks anymore seem to be asking a lot of money for what they are. If I were in your shoes I'd get a BLR in 358 win for hunting with.

You can have your cake and eat it too when it comes to long range and iron sights.
I have a Winchester 1894 30WCF built in 1909 with a 26 inch barrel and a Climbn Lyman receiver sight. I have no trouble ringing the 12” gong at 500 yards.

That said, I far prefer my marlin 336 .35 Remington or 1894 .44 mag for hunting

Keep the feedback coming I definitely have been getting some opinions and ideas. Probably gonna just go with what seems nice at a decent price but def like the idea of a little more traditional.

Im with the 2 nods for the Savage 99 myself, I love levers, always have. I know you’re leaning toward open sights, but my favorite “traditional” rifle is my grandfathers Savage 99 built in 1947 in .300 Savage with an original Weaver K2.5 on top, it’s the only rifle other than my own M70 7mm-08 I’ve shot deer with

Shot my buck last year with a hand me down m99 300 Savage with a Weaver 4x. 193 yards offhand, one shot. Went 30 feet and nose dived. Only shot it a half dozen times to check the zero at a hundred.

I found a Win 94 30wcf that was built in 1941. It belonged to an old guy who won it in a raffle at work. He pretty much kept it in a closet for years. Shoots great. I always wanted one.

I have a Winchester 94 made in 1976. It's well worn, but has a good bore. I have a Williams Peep in the rear. I can put bullets in a fist sized pattern at 100 yards with the right ammo. It's a light and easy carrying gun. You can tell how this gun was carried most of it's life because the bluing wear at the receiver. I might would opt for a fiber optic front sight. Also, you will lose at least 15 minutes shooting time in the morning and another 15 in the evening just because you can't see as well as you can with a scope.

Edit: Oh, the .30 WCF might not have the range a modern boat tail will, but it will punch a hole and leave a plenty big exit wound on deer.

Lever guns are super fun and really handy in the woods. I have a 1954 model Win 94 in 30-30 that i found at a gun show that was in great shape. It definitely takes some time to find one in good shape that is at a good price. Typically the cheaper ones have a lot cosmetic or rust issues. I paid 600 for this beauty and she shoots great. Every deer i have shot with it hasn't taken a second step.

Have a 94/22 mag that I absolutely love. A 94 Big Bore in 375 Winchester is on my want list. Don’t know why, but it is.
