My 16yo son built a .50 cal sidelock muzzleloader from a kit last year and it shoots PRB very well at 50yds with 70gr of Shockey Gold. He used it to fill a doe tag last year and is hooked! He has a bull tag this year and would like to use this muzzleloader. I’m sure his deer load is much too light.
Before I buy a bunch of things to try, I thought this group could point me in the right direction. For powders, I have Pyrodex, 777, and Shockey Gold. I’m assuming we’ll need something like a Great Plains and a bit heavier charge, but the traditional aspect is new to me. The gun is 48” twist, so a bit slow for some conicals. What are some tried and true options to test in his gun?
