Being on east coast, with young kids. It’s never been a priority for me to get into the point game. That being said, things are starting to settle down and with a few buddies now collecting points for the last 7-8 years, I guess I’m behind. They collect in mostly all states which are available. Funds aren’t that plentiful for me, so my question is. If I was going to start accumulating points for elk, which two states should I start? Bow, muzzleloader, rifle. It doesn’t matter.

Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico. Id do New Mexico every year since it has no points then pick one of the other three. I would lean Montana or Wyoming myself for points

Montana and Wyoming. 1 point will get you an elk tag in Montana and 2-3 will do it in Wyoming and you can draw with zero in the random drawing.

Forget about those dream units that take 10+ points. Get those general licenses and go learn how to hunt elk!

Plan on a long wait in AZ I just put in for the 16th straight year of applying in AZ in upper mid tier units and with point creep it looks like I’m going backwards. Units that took 10 points when I started are now at 17 to 18 points.

Colorado for opportunity at shooting one

Montana and Wyoming have tags that can be used in all seasons. Colorado is season specific. Not sure if that matters. In my world, where plans can change, I like the option of moving my elk hunt dates.

So, MT and WY would be my suggestion.
