I'd not be concerned with shooting them with any large caliber. That long hair soaks up a lot of blood so unless you anchor them quick you may be surprised on how little of a blood trail they leave. In a trap it's easy, a 22lr puts them down quick. One coming in to a call all amped up on adrenaline? Any caliber you are comfortable shooting. Bullet selection, and angle of shot will determine what exit wounds may look like. I'd worry about killing it quick, then be thinking about exit holes. You may only get one chance when they open your hunt back up... take enough gun.

Sometimes when calling I get a frontal shot. On these I’ve never had a bullet exit. On broadside shots with well constructed bullets very minimal damage, it’s the last thing I’d worry about.
Great work Old and Grey, I shot my first wolf this year, im next door to you in Saskatchewan. What calling sequence do you typically use for wolves?

When you say it took a lot of calling, is that prey sounds or wolf sounds?
I had a large pack howling across a river and we predator called and howled back and forth for a couple of days, they must have had a kill in there.
The next day after a calling session I heard two yips and then I knew it was go time. Soon I could see the black coming through the wllows. Time to saddle the horse and start skinning.

This one and his pal had a bunch of fresh weaned calves rounded up in a corner of a pasture. As soon as the calves see me they run towards me. At 20 yards I could hardly miss. Smoked him with a 300 wsm. Got his friend the next morning 20210211_220945.jpg
