Looks like Browning copied/bought out/took over the Sawvivor design.

Hmm, says 2004 so maybe it was reverse.

You are right. I just checked out the Sawvivor and it is the same thing. Browning no longer carries them butr I am not sure who copied who. Maybe Sawvivor initially made them and Browning marketed the product.

I didn't have to cut limbs form trees, but I did just cut the skull plate with a saw. No sense packing out the entire skull if you are going to plate it...

I carry a leatherman with a saw. It can't do a lot, but at least I have one if needed. I've cut walking sticks, knee joints, small trees with it. I break it off every couple of years but they replace it.

If I'm hunting deer & plan on capping the skull or anticipate doing some light pruning or cutting, I'll carry my gerber xchange a blade.

For something with a head as big as an elk, the xchange a blade is far too short, & the gator I is too short IMO as well. In those cases I'll keep a handsaw like rocky2 posted in camp or back at the trailhead. You can pick them up at home depot, ace, etc, and the saws meant for plastics or composites have teeth similar to a bone saw. Theyre lighter than the takedown saws, dont twist as much, dont seem to have as much risk of snapping the blade, & are cheaper. They also use more of their length for actual cutting, as opposed to the takedown models, which give up length on both ends. For comparison, below are a few weights & sawblade lengths:

Gerber xchange a blade, sheath, 2 blades: 6" blade, 8.2 oz.
Gerber gator I saw, sheath, 2 blades: 13" blade, 23.8 oz.
Gerber gator II takedown saw, sheath, 2 blades: 21" blade, 36.0 oz.
Irwin universal handsaw, sheath: 15" blade, 12.8 oz

I'll carry a saw. It'll cut up firewood, and it cut poles for my tarp this year. Plus it'll skull cap and do other cool things. Worth the weight for me.

I used a saw this past weekend to remove head from body to make it easier to cape out. Definitely easier than turning over entire elk. Used an outdoor edge combo
