Deadfall is a fact of life in the elk woods. That’s why it is so important to scout. I hunt around it the best I can but will also hunt thru it if I have to.

As an example of why scouting can save you time and energy, I marked my rout on OnX map in 1 of the many areas I hunted this year. Did not scout. When I got on that steep north slope, the deadfall was so bad, I couldn’t take the rout I wanted and ended up working a lot harder than if I’d of scouted

I’m usually fighting it trying to get up or down in the dark.

My biggest fear elk hunting (besides grizzly that I try to put out of mind) is falling in a sharp branch and poking myself, I’m especially worried about my ass and legs!

Amen! Colorado deadfall jungle gyms are the norm pretty much all over the state now. I here Idaho forests are much better
Its wide open grassy timber here in North Idaho. We send work crews out all summer to haul away the deadfall and mow down the brush before hunting season starts. Last year they missed a couple trees, which caused me to break my stride and step over!!! I promptly reported the incident and the individual in charge of the program was fired. We don't tolerate deadfall in Northern Idaho!
